(Temple City) – Landon Winslow’s 32 points were not enough for the Alhambra Moors Saturday night against the Santiago Cavilers and their stout defense as they fell 73-44 on the third night of the Duarte/ Temple City Holiday Basketball tournament at Temple City High School.
The Moors were able to keep pace with Santiago in the first quarter as Winslow got to the basket and converted on his mid-range jump shot. However, as Winslow got into his offensive rhythm, Jordan De La Mora and Jayden Baude did the same for the Cavs when he started to light it up from behind the arc.
The two each made a 3-point bucket, and Santiago’s starting five each had at least one basket to give them a 21-14 lead after the first quarter.
Then in the second quarter, Mora started to get hot from 3-point land as he outscored Alhambra by himself with his 11 points before the halftime whistle. Alhambra had no answer for the 3-point barrage, especially when Winslow had to be subbed out to get a breather.
The Moors struggled in the quarter, as the team had four minutes without scoring a basket to try to cut into Santiago’s lead. Once Winslow was put back into the game, he carved into the lead by scoring 7 of his 17 first-half points.
Santiago led 41-27 at the break.
Once the second half started, Baude, who was quiet in the first half, took over for the final 16 minutes. On offense, he had a team-high 12 points in the second half as he was able to extend the Cavs lead up to as many as 20 points before it was all said and done. He also contained Winslow on defense, who finished with a game-high 32.
The Cavs’ defense only allowed the Moors to score nine points in the final frame, winning 73-44.
Where is the rest of the team? They scored 17 in second half ; Winslow had 15?
