It just occurred to me that by relying on the portal, USC has been behaving much like the Lakers, scavenging players from other teams, instead of doing the tough job of evaluating and recruiting lower-level talent. The results are that both teams are good but not great. Portal players can have the same psychological baggage as high school players that transfer all over the place. In many cases, they are players that refuse to admit they aren’t good enough for the next level.

SC stupidly waited for 3 years for the NCAA to give guidance on NIL, The NCAA said let the flood gates open and SC followed suit in January of 2025, hence why currently without even having a shot at the CFP SC has the top recruiting class for next year something that they had not done under Riley. SC’s blessing and downfall was Caleb Williams. They felt they could go portal heavy and tried to win while Caleb was there which back fired and cost them 3 years of HS recruiting and development.

@ Anon …How much time does it take in the days of transfer portal ? How much time did to take Indiana or Texas A&M? Even when Riley brought Caleb – first pick in the draft- they were not a great squad

That is true, USC trenches not deep or experienced enough yet, but they are showing progress. Takes time to rebuild the disaster clay Helton left paired with the transition to a brutal B1G schedule.

This butt-kicking from Oregon showed everyone, loud and clear, that USC isn’t ready for the big-time. With the season on the line up in Eugene, it was made obvious that Troy’s problem is with the line, both offense and defense. The skill positions were never in question, but these guys need room and time to operate, and that requires better ability in the trenches.

So Riley’s guys wind up the campaign with a relatively meaningless meeting with a down UCLA club, and then it’s on to the Holiday Bowl, or whatever. Very sad.
