On The Couch: May 3, 2009

Lots of early sitting around, here goes. All right so as I am writing this the Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat are fighting it out in the final game of a seven-game series. It’s on ABC.

The Dallas Mavericks visit the Denver Nuggets following the first game on ABC. The Nuggets won all four meetings with the Mavs this season.

The Anaheim Ducks and Detroit Red Wings will start their second game of a best of seven series in the Stanley Cup playoffs at 11 am on NBC. The Ducks will be intent on winning and evening the series after Niklas Lidstrom’s goal with 49 seconds to play in game one gave the Hockeytown a 1-0 on the team from Orange County.

Versus for those of you that get it, will have the Carolina Hurricanes and the Boston Bruins in game two of the Eastern Conference Semi-finals.  Bruins won 4-1 on Friday evening.

There is baseball all over the place as the Angels complete their four-game series with New York Yankees and the Dodgers try to do the impossible and sweep a four game set from the San Diego Padres.

If your a true baseball fan then ESPN has the Chicago White Sox versus the Texas Rangers. Its Carlos Quentin against Josh Hamilton.

Yesterday was thrilling if your a horse racing fan. (See Andy’s Rants for more on this).  Mine That Bird came out of the clouds to take down Pioneer of the Nile in the stretch to win the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby.

ESPN put on a good show, with a feel good story about General Quarters 76-year old trainer Thomas McCarthy and his love for horse racing.

They also went soft with the Eight Belles incident from last year and featured her trainer Larry Jones. They talked about the new race rules that now have been implemented since the tragedy.

NBC did a yeoman’s job producing a good product. For once they got it right and stayed with the winning horse all the way to the Winner’s Circle instead of quickly cutting the replay of the race after talking to the rider.

Was it me or was the winning trainer of Mine That Bird (Bennie Woolley) a little upset when asked how long it took him to trailer the Kentucky Derby winner from New Mexico to Louisville?

Watched the last five minutes of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs between Washington and Pittsburgh. If the last minutes is any indication of what is in store. I will have to sit and watch.
