Athletics Notes: 4/7/2025

By Tim Byrnes

The Athletics wrapped up their weekend series in Colorado with an uninspiring 12-5 loss to the Rockies, but they picked up their first series win of the year.

The series began Friday with a 6-3 win in a beautiful light snowfall.
Starter Osvaldo Bido (1-1) was hit hard again, but like his last start, 110+ mph hits off the bat kept finding gloves. He gets warning track flyouts that can be stressful, but no one can argue with a 2.70 ERA.

The A’s defense helped Bido and his relievers with three double-plays.

Jacob Wilson was one of five Athletics with two hits, hitting a home run and three RBIs. The team chose to be more aggressive and picked up their first two stolen bases of the season.

JP Sears pitched into the seventh inning Saturday in a 7-4 win. Both Sears outings this year have lasted into the seventh.

Nearly every starter had a hit, with the lone hitless player, JJ Bleday, drawing three walks. Both Shea Langeliers and Brent Rooker homered, while Lawrence Butler continued a hot series by going 3 for 4 with a double.

Jacob Wilson hit into the first triple play by an Athletics hitter since 2021 (against the Yankees). The last time Colorado turned a triple play was in 2015 versus Arizona.

Wilson made up for it with a double and two RBIs.

Sunday’s finale was a 12-5 spanking by Colorado. The Athletics’ fifth starter, Joey Estes, followed up the 18-3 loss in the home opener with an even worse outing. He is quickly proving to be little more than a batting practice pitcher by giving up another six earned runs in three innings. After 15 hits, four doubles, four home runs, and six walks in seven innings, the Athletics may need to look to the AAA club for their number-five starter.

On the brighter side, the team got a home run and two RBIs from Tyler Soderstrom and Lawrence Butler, who batted .500 for the series.

The A’s have hit a Home Run in every game this year and, not to be outdone, shortstop Jacob Wilson went one for four to extend his hitting streak, to start the season, to 10 games.

Looking forward: San Diego comes to West Sacramento to open a six-game home stand.

Fernando Tatis Jr. and the Padres bring a solid .279 batting average and a scary 2.28 team ERA to Sutter Health Park. Over half the San Diego starters are hitting .300 or better, but the A’s counter this with twice as many home runs as the Padres on the season: 14 to 7.

Luis Severino (0-1) 3.75 ERA vs. likely Padre starter Michael King (1-0) 3.52 ERA
