The Alhambra Moors won the opening two games of a three-game series with the Montebello Oilers to secure their first Almont League baseball championship since 2017.
The teams were tied for first place going into the final week of league play. Alhambra defeated Montebello, 4-3, on Tuesday at Moor Field to go one game up in the standings, then clinched the title with a 6-4 victory on the Oilers’ home diamond Wednesday.
Alhambra’s back-to-back wins also gave fourth-year head coach Jovan Ramirez his first league crown. The victories improved the Moors’ record to 13-1 in the Almont League and 19-4-1 overall, while the Oilers dropped to 11-3 in league and 16-8 overall.
The Moors, who have won 13 consecutive league games after losing their opener at Schurr High on March 3, were scheduled to play their league finale at Montebello on Friday afternoon.
In Tuesday’s game at Moor Field, Alhambra scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to overcome a 3-2 deficit and then hung on for the 4-3 win. Sophomore pitcher Enicio Torres, who allowed one run over the last three innings, got the victory. Two of the Moors’ runs were unearned as the Oilers committed five errors. Senior Daniel Gonzalez drove in two runs for Alhambra.
On Wednesday, Montebello held an early 2-0 lead, but the visiting Moors came back with four runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth to go ahead, 6-2. The Oilers rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 6-4, but junior pitcher Marc Hernandez got the final six outs to record the save, and Alhambra had itself a title. Sophomore Leon Wang had three hits in four at-bats; he scored two runs and drove in one for the victorious Moors. Senior Gavin Escobedo and Hernandez each had two RBIs.
