Apaches Work Overtime to Advance

Arcadia Coach Nick Lemas and the Apaches advance to the second round in Division 1.

By Tim Peterson

(Arcadia) – Tyler Brereton drove in Julian Salmon in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift Arcadia to a 2-1 win over Aliso Niguel Thursday in the first round of the CIF Division 1 Playoffs.

Gus Cooper went nine innings for the Apaches allowing just one run in the seventh inning. Damian Catano came on in relief and threw two scoreless innings. Catano also did the job at the plate hitting a solo shot in the second inning for Arcadia’s only run before Brereton knocked in the game winner.

Arcadia had eight hits overall. Cooper allowed just five hits and struck out six with no walks in his nine innings of work.

“I didn’t even think about pulling him earlier. I mean would you have pulled him?” Arcadia coach Nick Lemas said of Cooper.

The Apaches will move on to face Mira Costa in the second round on Tuesday.

@ Sports Man: Once in a while, I’ve heard announcers use the term “extra frames” to describe an extra-inning game. I suspect that expression was borrowed from bowling a long time ago.
Ah, the English language; I think we’ve gone into the weeds with this discussion. (I think I just used a golf reference there.)

Apaches win in extra innings to advance in playoffs! ‘Headline writing 101 is ( i really don’t know and not trying to criticize) what ‘the headline was about’? I do not recall seeing anything except ‘extra innings’ used normally ( if i am incorrect I eat it) especially for big leagues , college and lots more because ‘extra innings ‘ define the truth of the situation

“Apaches Go Extra Innings to Advance” would be a good headline, but it wouldn’t quite fit on one line. Headlines have to convey the main idea, and they must fit in the allotted space. You did a nice job with that one, Tim.

Overtime? That’s like when a fan in the stands calls the umpire “ref” Lol. It’s called extra innings in baseball.
From T. Peterson: Correct. It’s extra innings in baseball. But when writing a headline it doesn’t sound right to put Apaches work extra time or Apaches work extra innings. When you’re working it’s called overtime. Working extra doesn’t sound or look right in a headline. Overtime is for headline purposes only. Headline writing 101. Hope that helps.
