Bond Steps Down at Azusa Pacific

By Tim Peterson

(Azusa) – Peter Bond has stepped down as the head basketball coach at Azusa Pacific after six years at the helm. Bond left to take over as the Athletic Director at Western Christian High School in Upland.

Bond has been in the APU basketball program for nearly two decades. He was an assistant coach for the Cougars before taking over as head coach in 2019. He was also a student athlete at Azusa Pacific.

In his six seasons as head coach, Bond compiled an overall record of 101-59. In his first year in 2019-20 he led the Cougars to a 25-4 record (20-2 in the PacWest Conference). Azusa Pacific won 20 straight conference games and finished #6 in the final NABC Top 25. The pandemic cut that season short just before the NCAA Tournament, but Bond was named PacWest Coach of the Year.

In 2021-22 the Cougars went 21-10 under Bond and stunned number two seed Point Loma in the NCAA Tournament. They again made the playoffs the next season going 22-8 overall.

In 2023-24 Cougars won the PacWest Tournament as a number 6 seed, becoming the lowest seed to win the PacWest Tournament. Then they reached the West Regional final with upsets over No. 1 Cal State LA and No. 5 Central Washington.

Bond played for the Cougars from 2006–2008 and was known for his ability to knock down the perimeter shot.

Azusa Pacific will begin the search for a new head coach immediately.
