(El Monte) – Schurr, under first-year head coach Austin Montoya, beat Diamond Ranch in the Final to win the SGV Shootout at Arroyo on Saturday.
Not only is Montoya in his first year as the head coach of the Spartans, Jacob Torres is in his first year as the quarterback for Schurr. Torres is a freshman…not a sophomore to be that will be starting for the first time but an actual freshman. As in he was in eighth grade last year.
“We have a freshman quarterback that we are high on and he’s going to be starting for us. He just enrolled a week ago so he’s just starting high school,” Montoya said. “His parents have a done a great job developing him, with all of the quarterback training that he has done and he has played for a lot of 7 on 7 coaches. Also we have our quarterback coach Miguel Aguero who can mold and shape him into hopefully one of the best quarterbacks in the SGV in the next couple of years.
Montoya feels good heading into his first year at the helm. “A lot of the accolades go to coach David Ramos. Being mentored by him and being a part of his staff has put me in a tremendous position. He built this program and I’m super excited and blessed now to be in this position.”
Torres is a huge addition as a freshman but Montoya likes the rest of his team as well. “We have a great senior class. I’ve seen them for four years and they have really bought in to the program. We have a lot of work to do. It’s been a lot of ebbs and flows so far. Sometimes I’m happy and other days I feel like we’re bad but I really like where we’re at. We’ll be ready August 22nd (opening night),” he added.
They looked like they were ready Saturday.
Hmmm…..August 22 ……Schurr vs Rio . Those sound like fighting words….
The pick Rio 27 Schurr 14 .
That’s just one of the exciting lid lifters that looms just 2 months away . Great early games are now more prevalent with new divisional system based on power ratings ; everyone has a good idea of how strong your opponent may be.
Schurr is really run heavy lol if you watched last year playoff game vs Muir they ran the ball 95 percent of the time probably throwing 4 passes and lost by last second touchdown.
Blocking and tackling are the coins of the realm in football. No matter if you’re Mater Dei or Keppel, success at those two disciplines is what pays for the points on the board.
This is great for enthusiasm, congrats, but in the fall, if you cannot run the ball, you cannot win.
