Wilson ran the Montview League table last year and has several starters returning. However Nogales looks ready to make a move The Nobles have a solid quarterback and some other key players. Azusa has had a great summer and looks good for at least third place. The rest of the league is up for grabs.
Projected order of finish:
Nogales: Last Year 6-5 (4-1, 2nd in Montview) Head Coach Matt Villasenor
Nogales has a talented transfer quarterback in Santino Garcia. Noah Lopez will play a big part in the offense as well lining up at running back and receiver. Last year he rushed for 269 and four touchdowns and had 454 yards and five touchdowns receiving. Orlando Zamora will carry the rock as well. Last year he had 333 yards and three scores. Garcia will also have a couple more targets in Isaac Guzman (589, 7 touchdowns) and Nathan Lopez (213 yards).
The Nobles should have enough on offense to carry them to a league title. They’ll have to knock off Wilson to do so.
Wilson: Last Year 11-2 (5-0, 1st in Montview) Head Coach Charles Lewis
Wilson ran the Montview League table last year but they lost Dominic Ezeonye and his 2,206 rushing yards to graduation. The Wildcats have 9 returning starters on offense and 4 on defense. Brian Silva will play receiver and corner. Last season he had 320 yards in receptions and four touchdowns. Josiah Lewis will also go both ways. Last year had 134 yards and two scores as well as 52 tackles on the defensive side. Esteban Trujillo is another player to watch. He racked up 36 tackles last year.
Wilson, the defending league champs, will be right in the mix again. The Nogales game will be for the league title.
Azusa: Last Year 3-7 (1-4 in Montview) Head Coach Alfred Zamora
The Aztecs have had a busy summer. They hosted their own tournament last month and have participated in several others.
Aramos De La Torre will play on both sides of the ball and will be a key part of Azusa’s success. He had 213 yards and a pair of touchdowns last year. Justin Casas will step in at quarterback as a first year starter. Joseph Elizade will be another target for Casas at receiver. Elizade is a two-way player as well. Senior Xavier Rodriguez will play tight end and will line up at H-back when needed. Casas will be protected by Guillermo Bravo who will be up front.
Defensively Alek Hernandez and Anthony Meza will play key roles in the Aztec scheme.
Azusa looks like a team that can finish in the middle of the pack. It could be good enough for a playoff berth.
Sierra Vista: Last Year 4-6 (3-2, 3rd in Montview) Head Coach Arthur Ball
The Dons went 3-2 last season in league but.were routed in the first round of the playoffs by Duarte 42-0.
Travis Brown stepped down as head coach and was replaced by Arthur Ball.
Julian Guzman is set at quarterback and Carlos Pinal will line up behind him at running back. Ethan Paez is at wide receiver.
Sierra Vista should be in the mix. The Dons may not have enough to contend for a league titie but like last season they could slide into the playoffs.
Ontario: Last Year 2-8 (2-3. 4th in Montview) Head Coach Jeremiah Budnovich
Ontario is coming off a season in which it won only two games and both games were in league.
The Jaguars will need to get at least one more to have a shot at the post season.
They do have some key pieces returning. Quarterback Christian Ruiz returns under center where last year he threw for 371 yards and five touchdowns. Running backs Samuel Abajuo and De’Jon Johnson return as well. Abajuo ran for 431 yards and three scores and Johnson had 199 and a touchdown. Emilio Magana had over 300 yards last year receiving along with a couple of touchdowns.
Defensively the Jags will rely on Angel Jiminez (28 tackles last season) and Andrew Wilson (35 tackles) to contribute.
Ontario will need a win over a Nogales or a Wilson to have a shot. Another two win season won’t get it done.
Pomona: Last Year 1-9 (0-5, 6th in Montview) Head Coach Jeremi Carter
Pomona is looking to improve under second-year head coach Jeremi Carter. The Red Devils came up winless in league last season and went 1-9 overall.
They have Garey and Ganesha in Week 1 and 2 before opening Montview League play October 3 against Wilson.
Pomona may be able to get a win in non-league but the Red Devils need to take big strides in league to get in the hunt. They may still be a couple of years away.
