Alhambra Beats Temple City, 27-7

By Ron Vrooman

(Alhambra) – It looked ugly at times, but the Alhambra Moors were able to overcome a slow start to post a 27-7 victory over the visiting Temple City Rams on Friday night.

Senior quarterback Bryan Leonard connected on 15 of 28 passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns for the Moors. Receiver Nero Navarro caught all three of those TD passes and finished with 10 catches for 153 yards.

Navarro also returned two kickoffs for a total of 87 yards; his 45-yard return of the second-half kickoff set up his 12-yard touchdown reception six plays later which put Alhambra ahead, 14-7. He went on to score on a 57-yard catch and long dash down the sideline later in the third quarter, and running back Halen Tsang ran eight yards for a TD early in the final quarter to give the Moors a 20-point win.

Tsang carried the ball 14 times for 68 yards, but Alhambra netted only 45 yards on the ground because of quarterback sacks and bad snaps from center. The fact that the Moors came up empty twice after having a 1st-and-10 inside the Temple City 15-yard line helped keep the Rams in the game until Tsang scored with 10:48 left.

Temple City got off to an auspicious start when quarterback Jake Leones sprinted 70 yards on a keeper to give his team a 1st-and-goal at the Alhambra 3. Running back Diego Rowe scored on the next play, and the Rams had a 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.

However, the Moors’ defense stiffened and held the Rams to a total of 90 yards on the ground, with only 17 of those yards coming after their quick opening drive. And, unfortunately for Temple City, Leones had to leave the game early on because of an injury. His replacement, sophomore Jacob Paredes, completed eight of 22 passes for 85 yards, with an interception.

Alhambra improved its season record to 2-1 with the nonleague victory, and Temple City fell to 0-3.
