(Glendora) – Tailback Halen Tsang scored four touchdowns and quarterback Bryan Leonard threw two TD passes to lead Alhambra to a 55-19 victory over the Azusa Aztecs on Friday night at Citrus College.
Tsang carried the ball 10 times for 119 yards and three scores as he exceeded the 100-yard mark for the second time this season. He also caught a swing pass from Leonard which he took 24 yards for a TD that put the Moors ahead, 16-0, late in the first quarter.
Leonard’s other touchdown throw came on a 52-yard bomb to wide receiver Nero Navarro that increased Alhambra’s lead to 22-6 early in the second quarter. Leonard ended up completing 14 of 19 passes for 217 yards in one of his best performances as the Moors’ starting quarterback.
The Aztecs mounted a threat when quarterback Justin Casas ran two yards on a keeper to make the score 22-12 with 6:13 to go before halftime.
However, the Moors drove for two more touchdowns to build a 35-12 lead at the break, and they blew the game wide open with three additional TD’s in the third quarter. Alhambra scored on eight of its 10 offensive possessions.
Navarro was again a catalyst for the Moors, as he caught eight passes for 137 yards and returned three kickoffs for a total of 98 yards. His longest return was a 53-yarder in the second quarter.
The Aztecs got their last touchdown on a kickoff return in the third quarter, when Aramis De La Torre took the ball on a reverse and raced 86 yards for the score.
The Moors’ Zack Chacon then came through with an electrifying play of his own, returning the ensuing kickoff by the Aztecs 53 yards to the Azusa 36. Four plays later, backup quarterback Robby Siegmeth threw a 33-yard pass to sophomore wide receiver Steven Escobar for Alhambra’s final TD with 2:34 left in the third.
The teams went scoreless from there as the game proceeded with a running clock.
Alhambra piled up 420 yards from scrimmage, while Azusa managed 227. The Moors held the Aztecs to just 48 yards on the ground, but they had some trouble defending against the pass, as Casas connected on 11 of 26 throws for 179 yards and a score.
Alhambra lifted its record to 3-1 on the season, and Azusa fell to 0-4.
