(Covina, CA) The Bonita Bearcats and the Northview Vikings faced off in the opening round of the CIF Division V playoffs Friday night and the Bearcats finished off the Vikings 31-19 at Covina Valley District Field.
Sebastian Vasquez did most of the damage for Bonita carrying the ball 30 times for 136-yards and three touchdowns.
Vasquez’s first score came with 4:58 to play in the opening quarter as the Bearcats marched 62-yards on four plays with Vasquez covering the final six yards. The extra point was good adn Bonita led 7-0
On the other side of the ball, the Vikings found it tough sledding as they only had the ball for two drives in the first half, neither one leading to points.
Bonita only had two possessions in the first half as well but the second was a 17-play, clock eating drive that resulted in a 24-yard field goal as time ran out in the first half.
The Bearcats came on fire to start the second half taking the opening drive 76-yards on six plays getting a big play from Travis Lippert to Matt Milazzo.
Lipper hit Milazzo on a crossing route and Milazzo did the rest outracing the Vikings defenders for 51-yards and a touchdown.
Vasquez got his second score of the night to put Bonita up 24-0 with 2:34 left in the third quarter on a 28-yard run.
Down 24 the Vikings went to work cutting in to the Bearcat lead covering 47-yards on two plays with the big play coming on a 35-pass from Robert Lucero to brother Isaiah. The Vikings went for two but were turned away.
Northview cut the lead to 24-12 when Lucero found Manny Garcia from nine yards out. Once again the two point conversion failed.

Hope was brewing with the Viking faithful as Northview scored again with 3:18 remaining in the game on a 17-yard pass from Lucero to Jaishon Bledsoe. Daniel Garcia added the extra point to cut the lead to five.
Some of that hope would be dashed when Bonita, faced with a third and nine, got another big play from Lippert to Milazzo.
On the same crossing route, Milazzo got loose this time for 78-yards, giving himself up on the Northview one to take more time off the clock.
One play later Vasquez was in the endzone again to push the lead to 31-19.
During the game the Luceros were making big play after big play with three pitches and catches for more than 45-yards each.
Northview went to that well one too many times as the final big play was interrupted by Jacob Maddox who picked off Lucero at his own 30 to ice the game.
Victory formation was in order from there for Bonita as the ran out the clocked and got the win.
