High School Top 20: Mid-Valley Division

Lorenzo Dominguez and La Puente move up to number 12

Whittier Christian moves to the top after two huge wins. Previously top ranked Monrovia only fell one spot after losing to Glendora, which beat two time Southeast champ Charter Oak in zero week.

A couple of other things jumped out in week one. Is Azusa this good? Hey Almont League what’s up? Schurr? San Gabriel? Anyone? Covina is impressive. Arroyo claims the Mid Valley Classic for at least another year.

1. Whittier Christian (2-0): 98 points in two games.

2. Monrovia (0-1): Turnovers killed Monrovia, not Tartans.

3. Arroyo (2-0): Knights and Rivera are humming like a well oiled machine.

4. Azusa (1-0): Speaking of well oiled machines.

5. San Dimas (1-1): Saints frustration taken out on South.

6. Covina (2-0): Gevontray Ainsworth and company walk over G-Stone.

7. Schurr (0-1): Spartans’ defense takes a hit.

8. La Canada (1-0): Yoder’s defense pitches shut out.

9. Rosemead (1-0): Panthers stand pat; a win is a win.

10. Baldwin Park (0-2): Who’s next for Braves? Alabama?

11. San Marino (1-0): Garret Glazier and Kwame Do lead Titans.

12. La Puente (1-0): Show me the way Jose! Perez goes for 248.

13. Pomona (2-0): So far so good for Rice and Red Devils.

14. Village Christian (1-1): Fillmore brings villagers back down to earth.

15. Wilson 0-1): Wheels come off for Wildcats in second half.

16. Workman (1-0): The Scott Morrison era begins with a W.

17. El Monte (0-1): Lions hung in until the bitter end.

18. South Pasadena (1-0): Maybe Tigers have been overlooked.

19. San Gabriel (0-2): That wasn’t pretty; Oliva still searching for first victory.

20. Maranatha (1-1): Minutemen rout La Salle in Crown City Classic.

Number of teams represented in each league: Valle Vista 5, Rio Hondo 4, Olympic 3, MVL 3, Montview 3, Almont 2

Notes: Bell Gardens, Valley Christian and Temple City were all knocked out of the Top 20 after they all suffered bad losses. BG took the hardest fall going from number 12 to completely out. The three new teams this week are South Pasadena, Workman and Maranatha. The Tigers upset San Gabriel while Scott Morrison’s Lobo debut was a 34-0 success. Joel Murphy’s Minutemen won big in the Crown City Classic.
