1—Lakers PA announcer Lawrence Tanter dies at 76. The longtime “voice of the Lakers” passed away months after retiring. He began with the team in the 1982-83 season and worked 43 years. (Tainter passed 9/23/2026)

3—Kawhi Leonard agrees to 2-year, $115-million contract extension with the Toronto Raptors.
4—Michael Penix Jr. returns at quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons tonight’s against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.
5—The San Diego Padres beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1, snapping L.A.’s 11-game home winning streak. Manny Machado homered (off Yoshi Yamamoto) and drove in three. The Padres hold the top wild-card spot with a magic number of one.
6—On this date in 1919: Babe Ruth hits his 28th home run of the season for the Boston Red Sox, breaking Ned Williamson’s major-league single-season record of 27 (set in 1884). … On this date in 1957: The Brooklyn Dodgers play their last game at Ebbets Field (a 2-0 win over Pittsburgh).

I can’t tell you how relieved I am that Kawaii Leonard, the most cherished Clipper of all time, is going to be able to feed himself and his uncle Dennis. Some hold this league punishment against him, but in the same way we trust our politicians, we must assume Kawaii had no hint that those extra millions didn’t just fall from the sky.
