(Covina, CA) The Charter Oak Chargers and the St. Francis Golden Knights clashed for the first time in the history of both schools with the Chargers edging out the Golden Knights 20-16 Friday night at Lou Farrar Stadium at Charter Oak High School.
It was a tale of two halves for both teams as neither would find a way to get points on the board the entire first half.
If a 0-0 half of football wasn’t your cup of tea, the second half gave you your money’s worth and then some with the final outcome not decided until a final pass attempt fell short of its mark.
St. Francis got on the board first taking their first possession of the second half 60-yards on three plays with Synncere Pitts III punched it across the goal line from one yard away.
After an offside penalty was called on the Chargers the Knights decided to go for two and the decision was rewarded with another one yard run by Pitts.
Charter Oak came back with a scoring drive of their own culminating with a 36-yard strike from Dutch Burbidge to Eilas Juaregui. The extra point was added by Rafael Ramirez-Aguilar and the Chargers drew to within a point.
Later on in the quarter the Chargers got their first lead in the game on a 24-yard pass from Burbidge to Chase Martin. This time Charter Oak went for two but Burgidge’s pass fell short in the endzone.
St. Francis regained the lead with 8:54 remaining in the final frame. Pitts III got his second score on the night again from one yard away to cap a 13-play 52-yard drive. Again Knights’ head coach Lance Mitchell called for the two-point attempt and it was good again with Anthony Matthews finding Jermain Thomas in the corner of the endzone.
As time was winding down a short punt left Charter Oak with good field position at the St. Francis 48.
On the first play after the punt, Charger running back Dom Campos got loose and rumbled his way down to the Knight one. Not wanting to give up any more time, the St. Francis defense allowed Campos to score on the very next play.
It was now the Golden Knights turn to try and move down field to try and win the game. St. Francis did manage to move into the Charger side of the field but the Charter Oak defense stiffened and kept the Knight offense at bay.
With less than a full second on the clock and a fourth and long, St. Francis’ quarterback Vito Schiada’s pass fell incomplete to end the match.
Next week St. Francis with travel to Los Angeles and open Angelus League play against the Cathedral Phantoms.
Charter Oak will take the week off before traveling east to take on Colony to start Sierra League acton.
