All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated:
Thursday October 24
Chino (3-5) at Diamond Bar (1-7)
Big game in the Hacienda. Chino, which started the season 0-5, has now won three straight league games. Diamond Bar lost its first seven games but finally got off the floor last week with a win over Los Altos. If the Brahmas can win their last two games they could sneak into the playoffs. It could come down to a field goal in the fourth quarter. The Cowboys are on a roll. Chino gets it done.
Chino 27 Diamond Bar 24
West Covina (3-5) at Northview (8-0) (Covina District Field)
It’s been a tough year for West Covina. The Bulldogs had a chance to get on track when they stated Valle Vista League play but then they lost their first two league games. They finally got a win last week over Diamond Ranch but they need to beat Northview and Alta Loma next week to have a shot at the post season. Northview has been dominant since Opening Night. The Vikings continued to roll last week with a win over Alta Loma. Everything would need to go wrong for Northview to lose this game. I don’t see that happening. Northview gets the victory.
Northview 34 West Covina 17
La Canada (8-0) at Monrovia (6-2)
Monrovia needs this game after falling to South Pasadena last week. If the Wildcats win they still have a shot at a share of the Rio Hondo League title. A loss and more than likely they are looking at third place. La Canada is in the midst of huge year. The Spartans are undefeated and win over Monrovia would give them the inside track at the league crown. Both teams can score but have had issues giving up points as well. La Canada makes a stop when necessary and wins a shootout.
La Canada 35 Monrovia 31
Friday October 25
Montebello (4-4) at Schurr (7-1)
One of the great rivalries in the San Gabriel Valley. You can hit a nine-iron from the football field at Schurr and land it on the 50-yard line at Montebello. That being said this year it won’t be close. While the Spartans have been rolling it’s been a struggle for the Oilers. Just a quick comparison of common opponents. Montebello beat Alhambra 24-14 two weeks ago. Schurr routed the Moors 42-6 last week. Schurr is just too big, too strong and simply too much. Spartans win big.
Schurr 45 Montebello 10
El Rancho (5-3) at Santa Fe (6-2) (California)
Battle for second place in the Del Rio. Santa Fe is 2-0 in league while El Rancho is 1-1, but the Dons’ loss is to La Serna. Whoever wins here will be secure to finish right behind the Lancers. Even matchup coming in. Both teams would have a shot at a league title if they played with teams not named La Serna. Both offenses can put up points. The scoreboard operator may be busy. There may be several lead changes early but the Dons overcome a late deficit and rally to win. El Rancho comes out on top.
El Rancho 35 Santa Fe 31
Downey (7-1) at Warren (2-6)
One of the best rivalries in Southern California. And if you’ve ever been to the game you would say it is the BEST rivalry in So Cal. The atmosphere is off the charts with a standing room only crowd and a noise level that reverberates throughout the stadium for the entire contest. The stadiums at Warren and Downey even look alike. Exact replicas with the home team colors. Usually the game on the field is terrific too. This year may be a little different. While Downey is playing like…well Downey, Warren has been struggling. Quarterback Madden Iamaleava and receiver Jace Brown, both UCLA commits, left the program after the first game. Iamaleava was then denied eligibility at Long Beach Poly and was forced to sit out his senior year. The Bears have had rough time since going 2-6 overall but they are 2-1 in the Gateway League. Downey has lost only once all year – to Red Mountain in Arizona – and is 7-1 overall. The Vikings offense has been prolific. They beat Long Beach Millikan 69-68. With Warren depleted Downey wins handily. Vikes roll.
Downey 42 Warren 7
South Hills (4-4) at Covina (7-1) (Covina District Field)
South Hills is 2-1 in the Hacienda League. A win here would be a huge step towards a playoff spot and put the Huskies in the thick of the league race. However, they’ll need to stop Covina and that will be no easy task. The Colts have a high-powered offense averaging over 39 points per game. Jake Duronslet and the Colts just have too much for South Hills. Covina remains unbeaten in league.
Covina 35 South Hills 17
Bonita (8-0) at Charter Oak (7-1)
The game of the week will be at Charter Oak High School. There will be Division 1 athletes all over the field. Charter Oak has four D-1 commits while Bonita has at least two that we know of. The Chargers may be faster and more athletic than the Bearcats but Bonita might be more physical. Can anybody guard Charter Oak receivers Legend Lyons (cool name) and Marquis Bardley? Can anybody tackle Bonita’s Dylan Robinson or match the physicality of Noah Mikhail? So many questions that need to be answered Friday night. Common Opponents: Bonita 27 Muir 7, Charter Oak 38 Muir 21; Bonita 26 Claremont 7, Charter Oak 43 Claremont 3; Bonita 34 Los Osos 20, Charter Oak 36 Los Osos 13. Bonita wins the fourth quarter and then holds on to win the game. Bearcats win…close.
Bonita 31 Charter Oak 28

Who cares? At least MHS uses what they have. Schurr on the other hand has to bring in new players ever year to compete. Imagine if SHS used their own homegrown players? They would be very average. But if you have to win that way then congrats to you. Wait till the playoffs when they get exposed for who they really are. …..
Ron Vrooman, AHS stat man And Cal hi is 0 and 8 now, possibly well deserved for hiring a lesser man than they possibly could have
jut saying so tru, Oilers are garbage with no hope for coming years.
ER vs SF: Lucky loser. Last year Sants Fe got put into D 12 and got to play 2 tiny schools from Lake Arrowhead believe it or not and a team from that power football area Yucca. I think it is in area 51. Maybe had ET’s on it. That earned the Santa Fe HC coach of the year in some circles.
@Anon
Pretty sure LS is hoping for D6 instead of D5 lol they are young. Lets see your team go up against Grant and see how they do lmao
Alumni,
As stated on another thread, even a broken clock is right twice a day…
Only way there will be change, since the HC? is the AD, is if District administration makes the move. No way the Principal will make a change.
It looks like repeat of last year . Their week 10
Win vs SM last year to get 3way tie for RHL crown had similar coaching enigmas . But winning cures all ills , sweep em under the rug !
Predicting D10 first round exit
Quite possible. Moyé couldn’t coach his way out of a paper bag. Dudes getting axed at the end of the season anyway. Hopefully he’ll throw another tantrum on the way out.
Great win for Monrovia seniors against la Canada. Monrovia up 21-0 halftime. Monrovias lack of coaching ability showed again. Poor clock management not running the ball delay of game after a timeout. La Canada scored 21 points in second half had a chance to tie with 3 minutes left final 28 -21. Monrovia kids are coaching themselves horrible no guidance. Head coach walking around like a used car salesman please school board make a change.
Well you hit the nail on the head with Northview vs West Covina score.
That’s half D10 and D11-14 lol
My View is a -70 team for gods sake
@ Anon: Remember the year when St. Paul was 1-9 in the regular season, but the Swordsmen still made the playoffs because all Division 1 teams got in? Was that the year you were talking about? Either way, that was a travesty.
Is this the year that MT. View (with a mid-season replacement HC) out coaches the vaunted Arroyo staff and beats Arroyo for the first time since 1980?
With all the debates about who should make the playoffs and how valuable is one ring versus another, how about this: ban all teams with a negative power rating from the postseason. Problem solved…you’re welcome.
These CIF rings are starting to feel like my sons travel ball team when they play a tournament on the weekend and gets a “Ring” to take home.. givin em out like candy now a days. Remember when St. PAUL won a D7 championship Vs PalmDale thought that was a JOKE of a match up but this newer system is TERRIBLE for playoffs. Bonita, Northview, La Serna , St Paul , and company should all be in the same division .. and in 2012 – 2020 they would be. Bonita in D3 first round exit… same with northview and SP. La Serna in D5 = CIF , REGIONAL , STATE CHAMPS BACK TO BACK and we all have to hear about it on this blog LOL ( but they are all local kids)
@Truth, oh I know who you are now.
@ Low Profile: I agree with you about the current playoff format. Setting up the divisions after the end of the regular season, instead of before the season, creates a situation that is ripe for favoritism—or the exact opposite, depending on the teams involved.
The previous system, with its preordained divisions, wasn’t perfect, but it was a lot fairer and placed more emphasis on quality football. I believe that assigning playoff spots on the fly has never been a good idea.
SF was a Semi Finalist last season, Medrano has taken ER on a semi final run and multiple quarterfinal runs, even Cal Hi won a playoff game a couple of seasons ago. Statistics and numbers say you are wrong,
What you are saying is you would rather be classified as worse team , placed in lower division so you can win CiIF rather than be a better team placed in a better Division .
This only makes sense if you continue to see COF as meaningful; the quality of your team is defined by what division you are placed in and not winning randomized equity CIF ring .
Do you actually think BG was more accomplished than Schurr last year ?
Everyone wants a ring. I do too, it just doesn’t mean what it used to .
@Truth, that’s the Sad world we live in now. Back when men were men we wanted all the smoke! The better the comp the better bragging rights! Now in this equity movement, this is what you get.
Told you Sem would be ok once league starts.
but if both SF and ER did not have to play LS then it immediately is a terrible league and first place team loses in first round
Yes I said that… The change in St Paul’s success in only the second season after huge coaching change is definitely due to Coach Muschetti[‘s works, both in hiring a better staff and his knowledge of how to win
Bearcat are you sure the divisions are not already in place?
Bad Optics May I ask what you mean by ‘garbage”?
Bad Optics Do you really expect All of the high school district administrators , many who do not give a feces about sports or winning, to research Cal Preps power ratings at district meetings with all the AD;s? I do not claim I am even close to 100% correct, but I do suggest your comment is far out.
I would rather my team get a wild card spot and a ring than to win a league patch and lose 1st round. I think our HC and AD are on board with this. More games more money. Time to rest players with little owies.
Montebello will be lucky to get a FG! Pete and DELETED can go cry after the loss.
You are not guaranteed with 5 wins , particularly in lower divisions !
There has to be “ room in your division” following placement of automatic qualifiers. It pays to have friends.
Yes I said that…
So this is really happening at MHS, huh?
“Or is it time for the booster to find some free agent kids with a D average and offer them football athletic enhancement programs for their keep them eligible home schooling programs. To play football while never attending a single class on campus, and somehow get all As and Bs?”
Talk about cutting corners, not seeing the bigger picture…on par with how MHS admin runs things.
Homecoming/Senior Night, and a Halloween gig at the park across the street means a whole lot of distractions to the CO/Bonita game. Chargers will need to stay focused and play 20 times better than they did against Colony in order to win this one.
I think either one will get in even with a loss, they will have the 5 wins required to land a spot in the playoffs, the loser will probably have a better path. The winner likely somehow catapaults into D9.
ER vs SF – winner enters playoffs , loser starts to pray.
unless SF upsets LS in week 10. what would that be? coin toss?
I agree that the “ tank to win “ strategy is both prevalent and powerful. The value of a CIF championship Is therefore diminished in my eyes .
In your example , however , the loser is not guaranteed a playoff spot . That’s dependent on CIF. gerrymandering of divisions .. The winner of ER v SF is likely D10 , while the loser probably hopes for D11 wild card .
All this speculation seems unnecessary, as does the making of divisions after the end of the season . So what if games in the first round are closer ! That shouldn’t be the only goal
Of playoffs .
My mistake; there are indeed only ten DR games, but hey, that still means there is only one game out of those ten that means anything. Think about it this way: if you’re in the movie business, and you make 10 movies, but only ONE of them is successful, you wouldn’t be in the movie business for long. CIF has a monopoly on this action, so they
apparently don’t have to worry about such a disgracefully low batting average. Only the schools lose on this deal, so the big shots in Los Alamitos couldn’t care less.
The loser of the Santa Fe-El Rancho game has a far better chance of going on a playoff run than the winner. Monrovia, St. Francis and Glendora all with disappointing seasons have the best shots at rings. Last year it was 2-8 Charter Oak 3-7 Bell Gardens 3-7 Walnut. All with championship runs.
Who ever loses between C.O. & BoHi might make a business decision in week 10.
Hart vs Schurr had some great games between both schools back in the day.
@FBF
I agree that there are some advantages to this model, and when as SGV is designed this year , the distances between schools are manageable- and new rivalries foreseeable , Distance becomes issue as you outline above , just has occurred in OC this year .
It’s a long ride from LaHabra to CVC or Sonora to El Toro ! I’m sure some schools would argue about league placement, want to use a different algorithm, etc.
Ans as evidenced by Katella, Loara , Savanna (Agnew) doesn’t solve all problems . Rosemead on the bottom rung ….omg !!
Could it be third place for Monrovia, a level that has not been seen in the RHL for decades.
Rumors have it that the suicide hotline in Mow Town cannot handle the call volume, and that nets and other types of measures are being deployed on buildings and bridges.
Say it isn’t so, but the early season caterwauling about the new coach and lack of talent seem to be coming to a head.
There is trouble afoot as, Cal preps now has Mow Town at a 0 rating.. lower than LC’s +.6
Could this be the start of a long predicted end and Temple City type slide from greatness to mediocrity? Or is it time for the booster to find some free agent kids with a D average and offer them football athletic enhancement programs for their keep them eligible home schooling programs. To play football while never attending a single class on campus, and somehow get all As and Bs?.
For the health and safety of Monrovia football fans, I hope not.
The rise of SP and LC seem to be the real deal now, Could TC who has demolished their cow pasture field not be far behind? Change is coming like it or not.
There are 54 playing teams in the Foothill part of CIF which consists of the West SGV and Whittier area schools. If they went to the same model as the other areas such as Orange County and Mt. SAC, they’re football only calpreps driven leagues for next year would look like this. There are some geographical problems because the Foothill League which is the Santa Clarita Valley is also in this area for some reason. 54 teams means you can have 9 6 team leagues.
League A
Downey, Warren, Mayfair, La Serna, Valencia, Muir
League B
Hart, Schurr, Norwalk, Golden Valley, Cerritos, La Canada
League C
Canyon, Monrovia, West Ranch, La Mirada, Castaic, Burbank,
League D
Paramount, El Rancho, Burroughs, So. Pasadena, Santa Fe, Bell Gardens
League E
Saugus, Dominguez, Crescenta Valley, Gahr, San Marino, Lynwood
League F
Montebello, Arcadia, Temple City, El Monte, Artesia, Cal
League G
Arroyo, Pioneer, So. El Monte, Pasadena, Whittier, Pasadena Poly
League H
San Gabriel, Firebaugh, Bellflower, Alhambra, Glendale, Gabrielino,
League I
Hoover, Rosemead, Compton Early College, Glenn, Mt. View, Keppel
@Bad Math,
It has led to some great league matchups and has been more helpful than harmful. You use Katella as an example and I will double up and tell you to look at the Hacienda League and how well that has worked. Traveling an extra 8 miles one time a week is not unfeasible. And if longtime rivalries are necessary, there are still non-league games.
A Bonita win wouldn’t get them to D2 lol. You’re currently in D4. Even a loss to Charter Oak won’t get Bonita into D5… for that you’d have to lose to both CO and Colony.
Divisions w/
Bonita, CO, Northview, Downey, St.Paul
Arroyo, La Puente, Montebello, South El Monte
Santa Fe, El Rancho, Schurr, Monrovia, South Hills, Lugo
San Dimas, Norwalk, La Canada, RHP, Covina, Chino
Would be some interesting and good local matchups
Shootout between La Canada and Monrovia? I have a strong sense that it will be more of a shutout with La Canada coming out of this unscathed.
There’s only ten games a year in Del Rio. There are problems with the “ competitive equity” type of releaguing including logistics and distance of travel, as well as ending some long time rivalries . Some teams plummet even with this reform , and still get crushed in league games I.e. Katella .
@Bad Optics,
I don’t disagree with your sentiment but your number is way off. There are 10 DRL games, not 20. Your arithmetic isn’t wrong, you just used the wrong formula. Instead of multiplying 4 games by 5 different teams, you should have multiplied 2 games by 5 weeks.
A Bonita win kicks them up to D3 or even D2 all but guaranteeing a first round loss to a Edison, Downey or Rancho Cucamonga. A loss not a bad thing. Keeps us at D5 playing La Serna and Lakewood and the like.
The Del Rio has twenty league games, and only ONE of them matters: El Rancho vs. Santa Fe. This means the other 19 games are garbage, contests that need not be staged. Outside of the unnecessary injuries racked-up in the 19 meaningless games, this bunch of insignificant meetings is bad for the schools who might otherwise earn more ticket revenue. The solution is for CIF to construct leagues in roughly the same way it puts together playoff divisions: by reference to the Calpreps power ratings. We all hold our collective breaths for the lumbering Federation to get this done.
