Arcadia Takes Muir, Apaches Enter Pacific Race

Arcadia's Taylor Lagace caught a touchdown and prevented two more with key picks Friday night against Muir.

(Arcadia)- The re-opening of Salter Stadium, homecoming, and the celebration of a beloved head coach’s 100th victory, turned out to be just the announcement that the Arcadia Apaches are official contenders for the Pacific League flag after a 34-13 victory over the Muir Mustangs.

It didn’t take long. Kick-off was at 7:P.M. and by the 3:32 mark of the first quarter it was 21-o Arcadia courtesy of two Myles Carr touchdown passes and a 72-yard fumble return by Nader Damouni.

On this special night for the Arcadians the Mustangs were great guests and came bearing gifts with three turnovers in their first four possessions and six total on the night. Three of those six; a Tairen Owens fumble inside the Apache five, and two Jeff Davis picks in the red zone, highlighted the frustration for Ken Howard’s team.

Myles Carr, 9 of 11 for 150 yards in the first half, opened the contest with a 48-yard pass to Taylor Lagace. Seven plays and couple key runs by Sheldon McKinley later, Carr went to tight end John Wong and it was 7-0.

On the third play of Muir’s first possession a pitch from Davis to Owens was mishandled and Doumani took it back 72-yards.

The Mustangs next drive ended with an illegal forward pass (Davis had been flushed beyond the line of scrimmage). Following the punt, Arcadia took over at the Muir 44 and four plays later Carr connected with Lagace on a slant route for a 23-yard touchdown.

Early in the second Davis was able to breath life into his team with a pair of completions to Karl Holmes covering 80-yards and the talented quarterback was able to sneak the ball in from 2-yards out to make it a 21-7 game.

The Apaches responded as Carr took his team on a 76-yard drive capped by back up quarterback Brian Ponce’s 1-yard run to make it 27-7 at the break.

In the third Muir’s opening drive ended with Alex McElwee picking off Davis on a long pass at his own 10. The Mustangs did get on the board on a 25-yard scoring run by Owens to make it 27-13.

Lagace however ended one threat with 7:24 to play in the fourth with an interception in the end zone. Then another with a pick at his own 22 with 4:04 remaining and returning it 46-yards. That Apache possession ended with Carr going 9-yards to Wong again to close the scoring.

The victory improved Arcadia to 2-0 in the Pacific and 3-2 overall. For Muir the loss was its fourth in a row, dropping them to 1-4, and 0-2 in a turbulent Pacific.
