Game Night: Mid Valley Division Week Six

Almont

San Gabriel (2-3) at Montebello (1-4)

Last Year: San Gabriel 38-6

San Gabriel has won its last two after starting off 0-3. Montebello finally got a win last week over Cal after losing four straight.

It’s a clean slate now and both teams need a victory to get off on the right foot in league. San Gabriel and Andy Guerrero make the plays when it counts.

Schurr (2-3) at Bell Gardens (3-2)

Last Year: Schurr 38-6

Josh Adame, Steven Ibarra and the Bell Gardens offense have picked it up the last month as the Lancers have won three of four. Schurr has faced a schedule that can be likened to a march through Death Valley in August. Schurr opens Almont with a win.

Mission Valley

Mt. View (3-2) at El Monte (1-4)

Last Year: El Monte 49-7

All-Time: El Monte 26-12

Mt. View has had a resurgence this year going 3-2 in its non league schedule. Jossymar Ulloa has rushed for over 1100 yards so far including 353 last week against Bell-Jeff.

El Monte has some weapons but they haven’t always fired on all cylinders. They should against the Vikings. It’s a big game for both teams. With MVL favorites Arroyo and Rosemead still on the schedule, a loss could mean elimination from playoff contention.

El Monte holds on in the fourth.

Gabrielino (3-2) at Rosemead (3-2)

Last Year: Rosemead 37-14

All-Time: Rosemead 8-4

Usually a team that likes to pound, the Panthers showed a passing attack last week with Matt Macias. They fell behind but were able to pull it out on some big throws.

They won’t need to air it out as much in this one. Matt Fregoso has a big night.

Arroyo (4-1) at South El Monte (1-4)

Last Year: Arroyo 44-0

All-Time: Arroyo 11-5

Steven Rivera is healthy but the Knights still might be able to rest him in the second half. South has had trouble stopping people and if the Arroyo offense is clicking it could be a long night for the Eagles.

Anthony Jimenez and Henry Masscoro have been splitting time for South at quarterback. They’ll need to produce to keep the Eagles close. Arroyo should roll.

Olympic

Maranatha (5-1) at Whittier Christian (5-1) – Whittier College

This could be the game of the week. Both teams are 5-1 as they square off in the Olympic League opener. Quarterbacks Stephen Anderson of Whittier Christian and Andrew Ellfers of Maranatha have been everything their coaches expected.

The key will be the Heralds defense. They’ve played pretty well for the most part except for last week when they gave up 35 points to Cantwell.

They’ll have to be at their best to beat Maranatha. The Minutemen have scored over 40 points in three games and over 50 twice. Last week they racked up 59 against Western Christian.

Expect some points to be put on the board but Whittier Christian will make the most stops.

Rio Hondo

South Pasadena (3-2) at La Canada (2-3)

Last Year: La Canada 39-20

La Canada has suddenly hit the skids. After two wins to start the season, the Spartans have lost three straight and quarterback Scott Gray is hurt.

South Pasadena has suffered back to back losses against Alhambra and Arroyo. The Tigers are looking to get back on track.

South Pas competes but LC should score enough to get it done.

San Marino (2-3) at Temple City (1-4)

Last Year: San Marino 19-14

All-Time: Temple City 36-18-2

A promising season has turned somewhat sour for the Titans. Last week’s loss to Golden Valley was its third consecutive defeat. The loss of Kwame Do continues to hurt San Marino.

Temple City has only one win under its belt but the Rams are improving every week. They had Rosemead by almost three touchdowns before they let it get away.

TC is young and still learning while San Marino has some experienced players from last year. Experience wins out here.

Valle Vista

San Dimas (3-3) at Pomona (3-3)

Last Year: San Dimas 28-0

This will be one angry group of Saints after last week’s loss to Baldwin Park. The once Valle Vista favorites are suddenly battling for their playoff lives.

Pomona looked very mortal in a loss to Northview last week. Anthony Rice’s Red Devils need a win to stay alive. They won’t get it here.

San Dimas 33 Pomona 12

Northview (1-4) at Wilson (3-2)

Wilson’s defense needs to shore up. Covina’s Billy Livingston had a field day against the Wildcat secondary. That being said the offense wasn’t bad. Brandon Schrieman threw for nearly 250 yards even though he split duty with Josh Morales.

Wilson will bounce back. They have too many weapons for Northview. Keep an eye on receiver Josh Nelson. He makes plays all over the field.
