(Whittier) – Last year after California thumped La Serna 56-7, Lancers Head Coach Margarito Beltran preached that with hard work the tables would turn and La Serna would be Del Rio League Champs. Coach Beltran’s mantra of working hard has paid off with the Lancers being crowned League Champs for the first time in 29-years after demolishing the Condors 49-7.
Andrew Buenrostro was nearly flawless for La Serna as he went 10 of 12 for 178 yards and four touchdowns in only three quarters of play.
Buenrostro helped get the Lancers off to a real quick start in the first quarter when he found Connor Burke streaking over the middle for a 53-yard strike to give the Lancers a 14-0 lead with 4:57 remaining in the opening quarter.
California was unable to get into any offensive rhythm early in the game with La Serna swarming to the ball on its first couple of possessions.
On the contrary for the Lancers was its ability to strike quickly on the ground on successive possessions with Richard Alvarez providing the damage. Alvarez punctuated two scores in the first half on runs of 53 and 66-yards to help blow the game open. Both drives only took three plays and less than three minutes combined. Alvarez finished with 142 yards on eight carries and three touchdowns.
It got worse for the Condors who finally crossed midfield with 2:15 remaining in the half. The best field California went for naught when Adam Contreras was intercepted by Christian Ballesteros at the La Serna 40-yard line and returned to the Condor 14.
Two-plays later Andrew Rosales would haul in an 11-yard touchdown pass from Buenrostro to send the Lancers into the locker room at halftime up 35-0.
The nightmare continued for California at the beginning of the second half, when on the kick off Jeremiah Lugo misplayed the kick and La Serna’s Luke Gonzalez recovered the fumble.
Buenrostro would find Austin Essig six-plays later from seven-yards out to add to his touchdown total on the evening.
The Lancers defense was impenetrable for the entire game just allowing 84 yards of total offense. The only score it allowed was after California blocked a punt and Miguel Cardiel recovered the ball at the La Serna 14-yard line.
It would take four minutes and two seconds, but the Condors would finally find put points on the board when back-up quarterback Drew Castro hit Nick Hernandez for a five yard touchdown.
