It seems like I’m getting this every week now. After hearing it from Schurr’s Albert “Rhino” Perez last week after picking against the Spartans, this week I came face to face with Rudy Robles of Whittier Christian.
“Hey did you pick us to win this game?” Robles inquired right before walking to mid field for the coin flip of the Covina contest.
Luckily I did or I might have been pancaked right there. “Yeah,” I said. “Ok cool”, Robles replied as he, Stephen Anderson, Jeff Worthy and George Flynn proceeded to shake my hand.
I really have to be careful who I pick especially when I’m covering their games. Well I’ll just tell everybody now. I got Monrovia over San Dimas and Whittier Christian over Village Christian in the Mid-Valley Final Four. Yeah Rudy I got your Heralds. And I still don’t have to worry about Ellis McCarthy when I’m in M-Town.
Worthy is terrific. Everybody including Boise Sate knows that. He was living in the Covina backfield all night long. Robles picked off a pass and caught a two yard touchdown pass. Flynn was making tackles all over the field. But it was Anderson who made the Heralds go. He made the big pass, here and the key run there. Whenever a huge play was needed it was Anderson who came up with it. He threw three touchdown passes and for 161 yards overall. But if Covina keyed in on the pass, Anderson would take off and run. On top of all that he literally took over in the fourth quarter.
I know the Schurr contingent was upset that I picked Monrovia over the Spartans. But it turned out I was right on. Monrovia won the game the Spartans kept it close. It probably should have been a semi final game but that’s the way the brackets bounce.
Abraham Gonzalez update from mom Alicia. “Thank God he is doing fine now. It’s the worst feeling a football mom can have. The doctors told him he can not play sports for a week but he will be fine.”
It was a tough way for the year to end for Schurr but despite the second round playoff loss Gonzalez, Aaron Cantu and the rest of the Spartans lived up to their motto all year. “Show up and smack!”
While it may be true that home field advantage doesn’t mean as much in high school football, do you really think San Dimas, Village Christian, Bonita or Mayfair would rather be playing on the road?
Yes I liked Bonita over Muir but I also liked Burroughs over Mayfair. Speaking of Mayfair, quarterback Evan Hunko came on the Mid Valley Sports Show Tuesday night to find out why we have picked against the Monsoons “the last three or four weeks.” I had to explain to Mr. Hunko that I only pick the Mid-Valley Division games. I’ve always been a big Mayfair fan.
Mayfair offensive lineman Justin Northern, who came on the show with Hunko, is headed to Fresno State next fall on a football scholarship. If you get a chance check out the interview. Good stuff.
Is San Dimas really in Monrovia’s head or have the Wildcats simply been the victims of bad circumstances? In the CIF Finals last December, it was raining Wildcats and dogs which severely limited the offensive attack. Earlier this year everything that could go wrong did for Monrovia in the fourth quarter. And if Nick Bueno gains another yard on the final play nobody is talking about it now. We’ll all find out Saturday night. The feeling here is that Monrovia gets it done. Coach Ryan Maddox has gone from semi-finals appearance to CIF Finals appearance in his first two years. Wouldn’t a championship in his third season make perfect sense?
Village Christian’s 34-0 win marked the end of Matt Fregoso’s prep career at Rosemead. He might not have been the best running back Rosemead has ever had but he sure can make a case for the toughest. Fregoso who stands 5’9” and weighs maybe a buck seventy could run by tacklers but didn’t mind running over them as well. His final 2010 stats are worth repeating: 360 carries for 2458 yards and 22 touchdowns. His longest run of the season was 96 yards. Fantastic Fregoso!
That’s my principle.
