On The Couch: June 5, 2009

Howdy Y’all

Well all I can say is I was wrong.

On the opening night of the NBA Finals, Los Angeles showed up.

Usually in this 2009 NBA Playoffs the Lakers would have phoned the game in and frustrated millions of fans.

Instead, they took their cue from Kobe Bryant and never lost focus on the job at hand.

Bryant should start to clear room off on his mantle for a Finals M.V.P trophy after his 40 points last night.

Orlando was never in the ball game and picked a fine time to go cold from outside the arc. Going eight of 23 from three-point land won’t win you many games.

Los Angeles did a great job on Dwight Howard who was one of six from the field and scored 10 of his 12 points from the free-throw line.  That is a Lakers defense getting it done.

I still don’t see Los Angeles cruising to a four-game sweep, but my prediction of Lakers in six stands.

In the Stanley Cup Playoffs it appears that series will go the distance.  Pittsburgh has managed to win a pair of home games they desperately needed to get back into the Cup finals and tie the series.

Last night it was the future of the Penguins getting to the older Detroit squad as Jordan Staal, Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby each had a goal.

The Redwings look wore down and tired.  It showed in that six minute stretch that saw a 2-1 lead turn into a 4-2 deficit.

Don’t look now but the Dodgers lost to a good team last night.  Of course, they could get swept by Philadelphia and still have a huge lead in the NL West.

In Anaheim, the Angels are a 25% probability to make the playoffs according to some software.  After winning two of three against Toronto, they inched to within 3 1/2 games of first.

Problem with the Angels is they can’t beat the AL Worst (West).

I know I am getting old when I watched Randy Johnson start for Montreal when I was a Junior in High School.

Now 21 years later he is a 300 game winner.
