La Canada 67, Arcadia 34

Winner advances to tournament championship game

La Canada wasted no time, racing to a 10-1 lead midway through the opening stanza before its smothering defense did the rest. Arcadia committed 19 turnovers and managed just nine field goals against the Spartans, who exploded for a paralyzing 28 to 9 third quarter romp before the dust settled for a 67-34 victory over the Apaches.

Mike McGlashan hit net on 11 of his first 13 shots and tallied up 27 points (14 in third quarter), 4 rebounds, and 4 steals to lead LC. Matt Faber had 9 of his 12 points in the first half while Mason Holle provided an excellent sideshow to McGlashan’s third frame ignition, with four deuces.

Half of Arcadia’s offense (34) was complied by Kiran Koneru (17) who had an off night in trey territory, hitting just 1 of 9 attempts, mostly from well beyond the arc. Koneru closed out with nine consecutive free throws. Robby Haines and Brandon Lum each recorded two blocks.

Keppel 35, California 31

Winner advances to tournament championship game

This game was an offensive calamity from start to finish. Keppel struggled to a 6-5 lead after one and shot an uncharacteristically frigid 8 for 32 in the first half, while California fared a little better, going 6 for 22. It looked as if the Aztecs were snapping out of it and en route to clear sailing with a quick three and deuce 16 seconds apart to start the fourth, but instead it eventually came down to a limp across the wire.

After prolonging the struggle by missing its first three single bonus opportunities to begin the final minute, Jordan Young helped seal the deal by splashing 3 of 4 at the stripe that helped preserve a 35-31 win for the Aztecs over the Condors.

Young (Jordan) finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Twin brother Justin Young added another 10 caroms and scored eight while Ashlee Wong’s buried three treys for nine points.

Cal failed on all 13 of its three point attempts while Keppel missed 26 of 32. The lone consistent bright spot all game was the Condors’ solid rebound and post player Maximo Gonzalez, who scored 11 and pulled down 12 boards to lead all players. The normally high octane pair of Chris Ortiz and Matt Arceo, both seniors and three year starters, both finished scoreless.

Mark Keppel 6 — 13 — 6 — 10 —- 35

California      5 —   8 — 7 — 11 —- 31

Walnut 64, West Covina 41

Aubrey Coleman fell one rebound short of a double double but nevertheless was the boss of the paint, scoring 23 points making 9 of 10 shots to lead Walnut past fellow Hacienda league rival West Covina 64-41 in a physical affair. The Mustangs, fouled eight times in the fourth quarter, hit 10 of 11 at the charity stripe to steadily drive themselves clear.

Bryan Gholar struggled to get it through the hoop in the first half but complemented Walnut’s offense down the stretch with a pair of key baskets in the third before finishing with 13. Gholar also wrecked havoc on the Bulldogs’ offense as he stole the ball eight times. Chibuzo Okoro earned top rebound honors by ripping 13 off the glass.

West Covina was led in the books by 18 points from Danny Gonzalez, who along with Andrew Torres and Mike Oniyah, each collected 7 caroms. The Bulldogs shot just 14 of 58 from the field and were outrebounded 29 to 49.

Bishop Amat 71, Montclair 51

Everything rolled the right way offensively and defensively for Bishop Amat as they shot 55.3 percent and blanked Montclair nearly all of the second quarter while undergoing a paralyzing 17-0 run. Amat was hot from beyond the arc in the opening half, drilling 6 of 8, before controlling the tempo in the second half and cruising to a 71-51 win.

Daniel Rodriguez helped, drove, and scored at will, knocking down a perfect 8 for 8 shooting with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists. Tyler Hill formed the other half of the Lancers’ main one-two tandem, leading everyone with 26 points, 8 boards, and 4 dishes. Taylor Olvera also joined in and added 5 assists.

Devyn Sampson carried Montclair with 22 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 assists. The high scoring wing caught fire in the first only to cool off into 1 for 7 over the next two frames. Also contributing to the Cavalier charge was Jonathan Hoang with a dozen points and 6 passes going for scores.
