Hart, Arcadia Both Winners

HART 31  LA CANADA 27

A late rally led by Lauren Barsamian and Sydney Zarate fell short for La Canada against Hart in its third game in three nights of the La Canada HS-Midvalleysports.com New Year’s Tournament.

The Spartans down by as many as 15 points battled back with a strong-defensive second half effort to fall to the Indians 31-27.

La Canada’s defense held the Indians offense to just two field goals in the second half with the final one coming with 3:48 remaining in the third quarter.

Barsamian came into the game in the fourth quarter and asserted herself immediately with a crucial tip-in after a missed free-throw that cut Hart’s lead to five with 4:16 remaining.

The Indians inability to make shots and missed opportunities after turnovers by the Spartans nearly caused them to be upset by a team still trying to find its identity after losing key starters to graduation.

The game started out well for La Canada with Kristene Hossepian finding her rhythm early with two jump-shots that sprung the Spartans out to a 6-0 lead in just three minutes.

After a timeout by Hart, Mariah Glasshoff and Melissa Boscarino led the charge with nine points in less than two minutes to take the lead for good.

A 13-0 run that spanned nine-plus minutes for the Indians was the undoing of La Canada which nearly went the entire second quarter without a basket or point until Zarate scored with 58 seconds remaining.

Zarate led the team with nine points with Hossepian and Cailan Howey each adding seven points for the Spartans.

The loss drops La Canada to 4-10 and face an unlikely foe in La Salle who has also dropped the three straight in the tournament.

ARCADIA 51 FSHA 27

After a lackluster first half, Arcadia came out red-hot in the third quarter to secure a third place game with a 57-27 win over improving Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy.

The Apaches went on a 12-2 run to begin the second half to blow open a relatively close game midway through the third.

Juliana Okamoto continued her strong play scoring a game-high 17 points and Melody Chang added 13 points to help the cause for Arcadia.

No one could have blamed the Apaches for its lackluster start after playing an emotionally-draining game the night before in its two point loss to eventual first-place winner Montclair Prep.

The Tologs never had the lead and after an Olivia Warner score cut the Arcadia lead to one, the Apaches began to wake up.

Okamoto and Joy Kang both hit three-pointers and Melody Chang stole a pass and scored to close out a 8-1 run midway through the second quarter.

The bigger story for FSHA was the inability to limit turnovers as they finished the game with 41.

The Apaches closed out the game on a 15-8 run.
