Almont First Round Belongs To Lady Aztecs

(San Gabriel) – The Keppel Lady Aztecs overcame early foul trouble to unleash a smothering, suffocating brand of full and half court pressure defense that sparked a 49-16 trouncing of San Gabriel Tuesday night.

The Lady Mats managed just one field goal in the first quarter, – a trey by Ariella Taghdis – and just five points in the second as Keppel raced out to a 37-7 lead at halftime.

Keppel, winning their 17th in a row, improved to 19-1 overall and completed a clean first round of league sweep in the Almont. Keppel entered at 4-0 while SG came into this 3-1 off stunning Alhambra 46-41 and recording close low-scoring wins over Bell Gardens and Montebello in games prior.

The Lady Aztec bench cleared as a result of the lopsided halftime score. Starters Alyson Lock and Sandra Gao both finished with 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals apiece. Bryttne Nakamura was all treys for her 9 while off the bench, Karina Kho and Jodi Aiau added to the fun as they each supplied a trey and two assists. Emily Thach scored another 5 plus three steals to round out the leaders.

SG was headed by 4 points and 8 caroms from Amaris Taghdis.
