Copping Mows Down Spartans

Corey Copping struck out 10 in complete game shut out

(Temple City) – Corey Copping went the distance and struck out 10 including the last three batters of the contest as Temple City shut out La Canada 3-0 Wednesday in Rio Hondo League play.

Copping was in control through out. He walked one and allowed just three hits. He struck out the side in the third and the seventh innings and fanned two in the second.

“His velocity was still there and he still had some left in the tank,” said Temple City Coach Barry Bacon. “He’s been our best.”

Copping had to be at the top of his game to best La Canada’s Brendon Shoemake. Shoemake nearly matched Copping pitch for pitch though five innings. He threw five scoreless frames before the Rams broke through for three in the sixth. Shoemake struck out six, walked three and hit a batter. He also gave up six hits but three of those came in Temple City’s three run sixth.

“Shoemake is that good. We haven’t played since last Wednesday and then having to come out and face him? That’s tough,” Bacon said.

In the decisive sixth, Copping walked and Jo Jo Torres ran for him and stole second. With one out, Jonah Jarrard doubled him home. Benji Sanderson then doubled home Jarrard and Alec Vigil’s base hit plated Sanderson.

Three runs was more than enough for Copping who then blew down the final three batters.

The Rams had a golden opportunity in the fourth when Julian Jarrard reached second after an error and a walk. But Jarrard was thrown out at the plate attempting to score on a single to right by Vigil.

Shoemake reached third for the Spartans in the fourth and Mitch Russell beat out an infield hit and moved to third on a sacrifice and a ground ball in the fifth, but both times the runners were left stranded.

La Canada dropped to 0-5 in league and 6-8 overall with the defeat but four of its losses have been by one run, including two in league.

“They’re the best 0-5 team I’ve ever seen. They have a good team,” Bacon said.

Temple City improved to 3-1 in league and 9-6 overall.
