After tying for the Holiday Bowl record of fewest combined points in a first half with Texas leading 7-3, things picked up on Cal’s opening drive when quarterback Zach Maynard targeted receiver Keenan Allen on three separate occasions. The gains went for 21, 19, and 10 yards to reach the Longhorns six yard line.

From there running back Isi Sofele capped the drive with a 6-yard scamper to regain the lead 10-7.

On Texas’ following drive quarterback David Ash completed 47-yard fade route to Goodwin who blew by Cal’s Marc Anthony for the long TD reception. Texas was now in the lead. 14-10

The Golden Bears decide not to go for the block and return the punt which set off a series filled with unfortunate events.

Cal started their drive on the Texas 27 but ended it three plays later on their own 44. Maynard was sacked and fumbled the ball, which was recovered by Texas defensive lineman Chris Whaley. On the very next play Goodwin broke off a 37-yard run to the Golden Bear’s seven and set up the games final score as Cody Johnson powered his way into pay dirt on a seven yard run.

Cal fumbled six times losing four.  “We had our chances and gave the ball away,” said California Coach Jeff Tedford.

Texas fans were in fired up and ready for a win.

The final turnover came late in the fourth when Maynard on a 2nd and 24 from his own 9, targeted receiver Marvin Jones who fumbled the ball and once again gave the ball back to the Longhorns to ice the game.
