Bulldogs Blow Out Beaumont

By Corey Kwok

(Beaumont) – Pasadena out fired Beaumont amidst a basket trading war in the opening half before clamping down defensively during the second to score a convincing 68-40 win in the second round CIFSS 3AAA playoffs Friday night.

‘Dena’s defense yielded single digit quarters (nine each) in the third and fourth frames.

The Bulldogs established control in the post early on and were led by Brandon Jolley (7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks), who plastered 17 of his game high 22 points for PHS in the first half.

Blake Hamilton (8 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 block) finished with 17, distributing flair from perimeter to paint. “B-Ham” flew in a ferocious slam dunk from the free throw line in the third quarter but it was nullified due to charging.

That charge was sustained by Beaumont’s Dejon Brown, who led the Cougars with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Brown presented a bit of a puzzle for PHS to deal with as he converted two “and-one” plays and visited the charity stripe two other times.

Pasadena’s John John Haywood marked 6 of his 7 points in the first half while elsewhere tallying up 6 boards, 3 dimes, and 2 thefts. Ajon Efferson drilled key threes for PHS in the first and third towards 6 points, with 2 caroms, 4 assists, and a pair of cookies to boot. Perris Hicks (4 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals) banked in a trey at the first quarter buzzer.

The Bulldogs, seeded #2 in 3AAA, advanced into the quarterfinals with this round two victory and will host #7 Bonita Tuesday night. Game time for this battle at the Dog Pound is set at 7:00 pm.

Bonita started the playoffs with a thorough 80-28 blasting of Cerritos before prevailing 59-44 over Brea Olinda. The Bearcats are led by stout athletes in Garrett Horine, Ryan Ramirez, and Tony Digirolamo, with Brandon Ko at point guard, and Jeff Nelson on the perimeter.
