(Azusa) – “Can you get it done?” Azusa Pacific University head football coach Victor Santa Cruz said to his team after Monday’s workout. “Because life is about getting it done. After you’re done here no one’s going to care that you played college football. They’re going to want to know if you can get the job done.”
The exhortation began with reminders to the team about off season responsibilities, and turned into a strong message about taking care of business in football and in life.
“It’s a big step,” said Santa Cruz afterwards. “If you look at our schedule it’s physical, physical, physical. Before on our schedule we would have a physical team followed by a not so physical team and another not so physical team. Now everybody will be physical. We have to work hard to develop that warrior mentality.”
Cougar Notes: While speaking to offensive line coach Jackie Slater about Luke Marquardt, Slater praised right tackle Robby Palacios (6-5 290) a junior out of Upland H.S. “He’s a terrific tackle and does a great job for us. We have two of the best (tackles) I believe on the west coast.” …With last year’s starting quarterback John van den Raadt (19 Tds, 7 Ints, 1,875 passing yards in 2011) graduating, sophomore Justin McPherson (6-5 190) out of Livermore H.S., is the only other quarterback on the current roster to have thrown a pass last fall. McPherson was 5 of 7 for 115 yards & 1TD. …Other quarterbacks throwing on Monday were freshman Erin Barber (6-1 185, Edgewood, Washington) and Tyler Tuiasosopo (5-10 225, Everett, Washington)…Yes, he is part of the Tuiasosopo family…
