Stolmack, Horner and Cox Power Spartans

Cox finished strong after a rough first inning.

(San Dimas) –  It took the defending CIF Division 5 defending champion La Canada Spartans three innings to solve Nogales’s pitching staff in its 7-2 win in the its opening round game of the San Dimas Saints tournament.

Alyssa Stolmack and Catherine Horner provided the power at the plate and Lauren Cox shook off a leadoff home run to Anita Ordorica to help lead La Canada in its first game of the season.

With the game tied at two, Stolmack blasted a homer to deep center that plated Annie Monroe for the game winning runs.

The Spartans blew it open in the fifth inning as Jessica Ogden doubled to lead off the inning. Katy Lee followed with a base on ball, before Horner took a 3-1 offering to right-centerfield for her first homer of the season to put the game away.

While La Canada needed three innings to establish its dominance, Cox wasted little time settling into a grove after the leadoff batter in the first inning. Cox went through a stretch of the Nobles lineup where she struck-out six straight batters. Cox finished the night with 11 strike outs enroute to her first win of the season.

Stolmack closed the night out 1-for-2 with a homer run and two runs batted in and Horner finished 3-for-3 with a homer and five RBI’s.

La Canada can earn a spot in the semifinals with a win over Alta Loma tomorrow at 5:15pm.
