(San Gabriel) – Gabrielino reclaimed the MVL crown by shutting out defending champion Arroyo 8-0 at home Tuesday behind two RBIs apiece from Johnny Moreno and Lorenzo Mena along with a complete game one hit shutout by Angel Acosta (his sixth of this season).
Frank Gonzalez also provided a big dent offensively for GHS with an RBI triple, while Eric Jara added a pinch hit RBI single late. Gabrielino led 4-0 into the bottom of its sixth inning and doubled that during this stanza by depositing four more runs to comprise the 8-0 final.
The Eagles clinched their fifth MVL title in the past six campaigns. It is the first for second year head coach John Taylor as his squad smoothly rebounded from and erased stings of an ill week losing to Mountain View and South El Monte. Gabrielino won four straight from 2007-2010 under former coach Joe Laski.
The Eagles seek to tune up for the postseason (Division 5 CIFSS) this upcoming week with plenty of practices and one more league game vs. Rosemead on Thursday to conclude the regular season.
