La Mirada Runs Over St. Paul

Johnny Hills scores three times to lead the Matadors

(La Habra) Johnny Hills and Adam Carrasco combine for six touchdowns and over 300 yards of offense in the Matadores 55-28 rout of the Swordsmen Friday night to start the 2012 campaign.

While Hills and Carrasco provided much of the scoring for the Matadors, it was sophomore Kevin Dillman who got things started on the right track. Before the La Mirada could find their seats, Dillman grabbed the opening kick off and raced 97 yards to paydirt. And yes, that is the same Dillman who also plays quarterback and safety.

St. Paul’s Paul Telles lead his team on back to back scoring drives including a two yard run of his own to put the Swordsmen in the lead 21-14 with 6:45 left in the 2nd quarter.

After going down seven, the Matadors needed a play to recapture the momentum that they had to start the game. The got just that when E.J. Meza took the ensuing kickoff at his own two and left St. Paul defenders in his wake en route to a 98-yard score. The extra point was missed but La Mirada was back to within one.

The Matadors regained the lead late in the first half when Gerry Myers connected on a screen pass to Hills who did the rest for a 58-yard score.

The second half was completely dominated by La Mirada who out scored the Swordsmen 28-7 and defensively shut down vaunted tailback Kurt Scoby. Scoby was held to well under 100 yards in his debut for St. Paul.

A gang of Swordsmen couldn’t keep Adam Carrasco out of the endzone three times!

Carrasco capped the scoring with two of his three touchdowns in the final frame on runs of nine and 16 yards.

After the game La Mirada head coach Mike Moschetti spoke about his teams opening night performance. “We were totally out of sync offensively in the first half but we had big plays and special teams. Our last drive is something that I am so proud of. St. Paul knew we were going to run the ball, knew what we were going to do and we just kept running it.”

The Matadors non-league schedule gets even tougher as they travel next week to meet the La Habra Highlanders who have won the last three meetings.
