Matadors Cruise to Easy Win over Animo

By Josh Ouellette

(San Gabriel) –  San Gabriel landed a knockout punch right away as Joseph Mayorga returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown and the Mats coasted the rest of the way in a 53-0 win over Animo Friday night in the season opener.

After a quick three and out, SG was at it again with a 47 yard drive that Steven Garcia finished by pounding it in from three yards out.

The same script was repeated four times as San Gabriel capitalized on short field position with a ground attack due to strong offensive line play. Quarterback Mikal Quintanilla scored and Garcia scored again while Mayorga crossed the goal line twice more.

Shortly before the half, Gabriel Larios picked off his second pass of the night, and took it to the house from 50 yards out.

On the opening drive of the third quarter, Eric Alvarez intercepted a Gabriel Arrellano pass and returned it 25 yards to end the scoring spree for the Mats and clinch the 53 point crushing.

San Gabriel moves on to play South Pasadena next week.

“We know South Pas is going to be  a great team. They’re going to be a lot better (than Animo),” Oliva said. “Last year they had a heck of a season. We’re expecting a battle with them.”
