(West Covina) – A steady ground assault capped by three touchdown runs from Jay Anderson was all Bishop Amat needed to beat West Covina 21-7 Friday night at Thyberg Field.
Anderson jump-started Amat to a 7-0 lead with 4:33 left in the first quarter on a three yarder and repeated the feat in the third to put Amat up 14-7. Anderson finished the night rushing for 175 yards on 22 carries.
West Covina tied it at seven at the end of a marathon 18 play, 55 yard drive that lasted eight minutes and 37 seconds. Quarterback George Johnson barged through from a yard out with 3:14 left in the half. Running back Ricky Johnson broke loose for a run of 30 on the first play of the drive.
WC’s Max Zamora punted on fourth and 31 on the 11th play of the drive only to get roughed up after the kick. The infraction leveled against the Lancers gave West Covina an automatic first down at the Amat 21.
Bishop Amat’s Jerry McClanahan (8-10, 101 yards, interception) found Darien Johnson for 53 yards on a second and 12 play for the aerial highlight of the contest.
The WC had a shot at making it interesting late in the fourth as George Johnson rattled off passes of 18, 9, 8, and 12 to Chris Solomon, Anthony Molina, Ricky Johnson, and Adrian Villalobos as the Bulldogs moved the ball down to the Lancer 20.
A poor snap resulting in a loss of five was followed by Johnson (George) being fanned out to midfield by oncoming Amat defenders only to throw it away. A Bulldog defender however was penalized for an illegal block and all of a sudden West Covina was dealt an impossible third and 46. Villalobos caught a nine yard pass but an incomplete fourth down throw sealed it for Bishop Amat inside the two minute mark.
