Week 9 Roundups: Northwest Division

DEL REY
La Salle 61, Cantwell-Sacred Heart 30

The Lancers (9-0, 4-0) continued their undefeated streak by knocking off the Cardinals (2-7, 2-3) Friday night at La Salle High’s Kohorst Field, clinching a share of the Del Rey League title.

Running back Israel Lacy led the Lancers’ balanced attack on the ground with 164 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries, while quarterback Austin Wallis hit eight of his 13 pass attempts for 123 yards and three first-half touchdown passes. Wallis has now gone nine games without giving up an interception.

La Salle’s last loss came on the last game of last year against the Cardinals, which ended in a scuffle between both schools and their fans and ultimately led to the hiring of current coach Russell Gordon.  The Lancers will close out the season against Verbum Dei with a shot at their 10th straight win and

MONTVIEW

Sierra Vista 20, Duarte 14

The Dons (6-3, 4-2) moved into a tie for third place in the Montview League as they held off the Falcons (4-5, 3-3) by stopping an onside kick late in the game Friday night at Sierra Vista High.

Although the Dons led 20-7 late in the game, the Falcons recovered a fumble on the Dons’ 10-yard line and converted the turnover into a score with 19 seconds left in the game as Denzel Talifero connected with Samuel Edwards for the 10-yard score.

The Dons head to Citrus College to face Azusa with a playoff berth in the Balance for both the Dons and the Aztecs.
Gladstone 49, Workman 14

The Gladiators (8-1, 5-1) clinched at least a share of the Montview League title with a commanding win over the Lobos (2-7, 1-5) Friday night at Citrus College.

Quarterback Kevin Amezquita led the Gladiators in rushing, getting 153 yards and scoring three of the Gladiators’ seven first-half touchdowns, he also threw a fourth touchdown, a 16-yard toss to Christian Arteaga.

The Gladiators travel to  Ganesha High’s Nancy McCracken Stadium to take on the Giants for a chance to claim the Montview title outright with a win.
OLYMPIC
Maranatha 42, Valley Christian 21

The Minutemen (3-6, 2-1) doubled up on the Crusaders (2-6, 1-2) as they held on to second place in the Olympic League their win Friday night at Maranatha High.

The Minutemen broke a 7-7 tie in the second quarter on two touchdown passes from Eli Snyder to Troy French, for 29 and 25 yards, respectively, to give the Miniutemen a 21-7 lead. The Crusaders cut the lead to 21-14 on Jack Struiksma’s  66-yard toss to Clayton Granch. Struiksma and Granch connected on all three Crusaders scores.

The Minutemen close out the regular season against Village Christian at Occidental College with a chance to secure a berth in the Northwest Division playoffs.
PIONEER
Compton Centennial 27, El Segundo 14

The Apaches (3-6, 2-2) moved into a tie for third place in the Pioneer League as they knocked off the Eagles (4-5, 2-2) Friday night at Compton Centennial High.

Although the Apaches had taken a 21-0 lead in the third quarter, the Eagles scored twice thanks to two Apache fumbles. Quarterback Lars Nootbaar connected with Jaime Stewart and Scott McKenna to cut the lead to 21-14 with 11 minutes left in the game. However, the Apaches rallied on Ronald Reed’s one-yard run to put the game out of reach.

The Eagles head to South Torrance to close out the season with the Spartans, while the Apaches head to Lawndale to take on the Cardinals, with both road teams looking to secure a berth in the Northwest Division playoffs.
North Torrance 36, South Torrance 28

The Saxons (7-2, 4-0) clinched a share of the Pioneer League title as they knocked off the Spartans (4-5, 1-3) to pull even in the “Torrance City Championship” with their win Friday night at North Torrance’s Saxon Field.

Mike Jurado racked up 258 all-purpose yards and scored four touchdowns, including a 90-yard catch and a 98-yard kickoff return in the win. Quarterback Jorge Hernandez threw for 216 yards and four scores in the win. Despite the loss, Spartans quarterback Kyle Nesbit rushed for 58 yards and scored three times.

The Saxons head for Zamperini Stadium to face off against the Torrance Tartars for a chance to claim the league crown outright. The Spartans will host El Segundo in the regular season finale with an opportunity to play spoiler to the Eagles’ chances.
Torrance 41 Lawndale 6

The Tartars (5-4, 3-1) secured a berth in the Northwest Division playoffs and set up a shot at the League title with a dominating win over the Cardinals (3-6, 0-4) Friday night at Lawdale High’s Cardinal Field.

Aside from a 96-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Austin Manigo with less than eight minutes left in the game, the Cardinals were never given an opportunity to get close to a score. Kamal Miller and Aaron Salva each scored rushing touchdowns putting the Tartars up 13-0 after one quarter. The Tartars put up a total of 310 total yards of offense in the  win.

The Tartars will host the Saxons at Zamperini Stadium to decide the Pioneer League championship. The Cardinals will host the Apaches with an opportunity to play spoiler to
