Week 9 Roundups: Southeast Division

DEL RIO
El Rancho 46, Pioneer 14

Six touchdowns by quarterback Joey Sanchez helped the Dons (4-5, 1-3) snap their three-game Del Rio League losing streak as they knocked off the Titans (2-7, 1-3) to pull into a tie for fourth place in the Del Rio, Friday night at Pioner High’s Titan Stadium.

Sanchez threw for 293 yards and threw two scores, an 81-yard screen pass to Johnny Gomez on the third play of the game and an early fourth quarter pass that bounced off Damon Houlac and into the hands of Ryan Araujo, which began a 26-point scoring wave, including three of Sanchez’ four rushing touchdowns.

The Titans close out the season next week with their annual rivalry game against Santa Fe for the “Super Chief Bell,” while El Rancho closes out the season against Whittier.
California 17, Whittier 3

The Condors (8-1, 3-1) bounced back from last week’s loss to Santa Fe by limiting the Cardinals (3-6, 0-4) to a late field goal in the second quarter in their victory Friday night at Cal High’s Whittier District Field.

The Condors had a 10-0 lead late in the first half when the Cardinals got on the board with a 21-yard field goal by Matt Oliver. However, the Condors would score in the third quarter and seal the win on Aaron Garcia’s four-yard run late in the third.

The Condors will face their other cross-town rivals, La Serna, in the next edition of the “Mustang Bowl,” next Friday at Whittier District Field, with a shot at earning a share of the Del Rio League title with an upset of the Lancers, who are undefeated in league play.

HACIENDA
West Covina 35, Diamond Bar 21

The Bulldogs (4-5, 3-2) avoided elimination from the Southeast Playoff picture with a convincing win over the Brahmas (3-6, 2-3) to move into a tie for third place in the Hacienda League Friday night at West Covina’s Bulldog Field.

The Bulldogs broke a 14-14 first-quarter tie with two scores in the second, a 30-yard run by Antonio Hull and a 69-yard passing score from Jonathon Najera to Aaron Salgado, their second touchdown in the game. Salgado also caught a 64-yard pass in the first quarter from Najera to take a 7-0 lead.

The Bulldogs travel to Rowland to take on the Raiders, who moved into a first-place tie with Bonita, who will host the Brahmas with a chance for the Bearcats to clinch a tie for the League title for both hosts with wins.

PACIFIC
Crescenta Valley 21, Hoover 19

A blocked field goal by Kevin Hello gave the Falcons (4-5, 2-4) their second Pacific League win of the season, ending a three-game losing streak in league while preventing the Tornadoes (3-6, 1-5)  from earning a second win against another non-Glendale based school, Friday night at Glendale High’s Moyse Field.

The Tornadoes got the ball on the Tornadoes’ 26-yard line when Falcons running back William Wang fumbled the ball, turning it over to the Tornadoes. They then drove to the Falcons’ 18-yard line, where a sack of quarterback Brendan Kerr forced the 35-yard attempt by Jesse Pina with 34 seconds left in the game and a shot at the victory.

Hoover will return to Moyse Field next week as they face off against Glendale in the annual “Baklava Bowl” while the Falcons fly to Apache Stadium to take on Arcadia with a chance to play spoiler to the Apaches’ playoff hopes.
SAN GABRIEL VALLEY
Downey 28, Compton Dominguez 12

The Vikings (6-3, 3-1) earned a berth in the Southeast Division  playoffs as they thwarted the Dons’ (4-5, 3-1) chances for a share of the San Gabriel Valley League title with their win Friday night at Downey High’s Viking Stadium.

Justin Huff ruled the ground as he rushed for 262 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries, while the Vikings’ defense shut down the Dons’ leading rusher, Eric Black, to 59  yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.

The Vikings head to Lynwood to face off against the Knights, while the Dons take on Paramount at home. A win by both the Dons and Vikings will result in the San Gabriel Valley league title being split among the three teams.
Paramount 31, Warren 15

The Pirates (8-1, 4-0) over came a 15-14 third-quarter deficit with 17 unanswered points in the second half, keeping the Bears (0-9, 0-4) winless this season with their victory Friday night at Paramount High’s Pirates’ Stadium.

The Pirates led 14-7 at the half on Devonte Dixon’s touchdown and Tyrell Davis’ interception return, when the Bears took the lead midway through the third. However, Brian Velez kicked a 30-yard field goal to take a 17-15 lead in the third. Dixon scored again and Ed Vander, playing in his first varsity game, took his first carry 60 yards for the score.

The Pirates will head to Dominguez to take on the Dons in a show down for the league title while the Bears hope to end their losing streak when they host Gahr.
SUBURBAN
Norwalk 63, Glenn 0

The Lancers (7-2, 3-2) ended their abbreviated regular season by shutting out the Eagles (1-7, 0-4) to earn a tie for second place in the Suburban League with their win Friday night at Excelsior Stadium, giving the Lancers the Mayor’s Cup for the 10th straight year.

Running Back Rashaad Penny and quarterback Jaquise Hooper each scored two touchdown on tehground, with Penny rushing for 133 yards and Hooper rushing for 119.  Penny’s two touchdowns on the night raised his total touchdowns to 31 for the season, a new school record for touchdowns in a season.

The Lancers now wait with Bellflower for the result of next week’s game between La Mirada and Mayfair to determine , if there will be a three-way tie for second and the playoff shake out, while the Eagles head to Artesia to close out their season against the Pioneers.

Bellflower 34, Mayfair 27 (OT)

The Buccaneers (5-4, 3-2) moved into a tie for second place in the Suburban league as they closed out their regular season with an overtime win over the Monsoons (3-5, 2-2) to win the “Rumble at Ron Yary” Friday night at Bellflower’s Ron Yary Stadium.

Ryan Hunley led the Buccaneers’s offense with 232 yards on 41 carries, while quarterback Swain Williams sealed the victory in overtime with a one-yard keeper. Mayfair’s freshman quarterback Isaiah Jackson threw three touchdowns to Keenan Wright, including a five-yard score to take a 27-24 lead late in the fourth quarter. However Diego Sanchez tied the game at 27 with a 43-yard field goal as time expired in regulation.

Mayfair heads to La Mirada to take on the Matadores to close out the season and attempt to play spoiler for the Matadores’ hopes for an outright claim to the Suburban League title.
