The Peterson Principle: 12/31/12

Who’s that stiff with Vic the Brick?

Ok even though 2012 is drawing to a close and another year is upon us I won’t go into what gift a coach should have received for Christmas or what a player’s New Year’s resolution should be. It has definitely been done before and is a tired act at this point. But I will go into things I hope I don’t see in 2013.

There are things I saw this year in sports that made me cringe. Some of them I had seen before and some of them it was the first time but hopefully I won’t have to see (or hear) them again. Or at the very least they need to be kept to a bare minimum. Whether it’s a rule, a quote, a formation, a tradition, etc. certain things should be put to rest. In 2013 there should be a moratorium on the following:

Justin Bieber singing the theme song for NBA games on Christmas Day: I don’t mind the slew of  NBA games on Christmas but Bieber singing “Ba rum pum pum pum…” before and after every commercial break was way too much. It had me reaching for the remote by the second game.

The “Super Team” label. USC was a super team, the Lakers were a super team and the Philadelphia Eagles were a super team in 2011. We’ve all seen what happened to them. Yeah the Miami Heat did win a championship but it took them a year. Please, no more super teams.

The term “beastmode.” First it was beast, that got old and now it’s beastmode. It was cool at first I guess but now it’s the most overused word in sports. Time to think of something else.

Holding calls in high school football. It’s been said that holding could be called on every play but does that mean the officials really have to call it on every play? Let it go especially when it has absolutely no impact on the outcome of the play.

Over the top PA Announcers: Why do certain high school football PA announcers have to tell you what the Dodgers, Angels, USC, UCLA, Lakers, Clippers and every other local team is doing? Just focus on the task at hand and leave that other stuff to the guys at ESPN. Plus it kind of ruins it for you if you have it on DVR at home.

Geographically unfriendly divisions: Why are schools from Santa Barbara in the same division as schools in the San Gabriel Valley – ie – Northwest Division. We made it work and I’m sure we could make it work again but it’s better for everybody involved if everything is kept reasonably local. Why should Mom and Dad have to drive from Baldwin Park to Ojai  to see their son play football?

Missing rosters and stats on Max Preps: Robledo at the Trib has complained about this before and although it may seem like whining, it is a nuisance. Look, if you want to see better coverage for your team get those names and numbers posted.

Sports Talk” shows that talk about everything but sports: When I turn on sports talk radio, I don’t want to hear about Brittany Spears, Lady Gaga, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise or what Angelina Joile was wearing on the red carpet. Hey who won the stinking game and why? Anybody get traded? I won’t mention any names but the other day I was listening to “Money” and “P”.

Complaints about “too much love” for a particular school: Here at Mid Valley Sports we are not biased towards Temple City, El Monte, Arroyo, San Gabriel, Rosemead, Alhambra, La Canada, South El Monte, Monrovia, every other team in the Mid-Valley, Southeast, and Northwest Divisions, oh and La Mirada…Yeah La Mirada. It’s not love, it’s called solid coverage.

Lockouts, strikes, work stoppages, etc: The Kings win the Stanley Cup and Hockey goes on strike. Who knows if the NHL will ever sufficiently recover? There was a work stoppage in basketball last year until they finally got started on Christmas Day. If baseball goes out again it could set the sport back years. I think everybody is making enough money. Work stoppages need to stop before they ruin the sport.

I’ve only listed ten here. I’m sure there are plenty more out there. What things need to go away in 2013?
