Mid Valley Sports got a quick Q&A with Schurr alum and pro boxer Xavier “Mongoose” Montelongo Jr. (3-1-1), who is coming off a TKO win over Miguel Armendarez.

Mid Valley Sports: How you doing?

Xavier “Mongoose” Montelongo Jr.: I’m blessed and just anxious to get back into training camp and back to work .

MVS: So how is training going?

XMM: Training is going good, getting ready to start sparring again. We are working with a new coach Manuel Robles and things could not be better.

MVS: When’s your next bout?

XM: Me and my team are targeting the end of August.

MVS: What does a day of training look like for you?

XMM:Get up in the morning around 7 am and run 4-5 miles around the city of
San Pedro. Around 11am I do some kind of mitt work with my dad then push ups, abs, then sprints that’s followed by heading to the Maywood Boxing gym and work with coach Manny. There I jump rope , shadow boxing , heavy & double end bag , sparring or mitts ( depending on day ). We try to spar 2-3 times a week

MVS: What’s your diet while  getting ready for a fight?

XMM: When dieting I eat chicken, fish, salads and fiber such as oatmeal and certain cereals.

MVS: Favorite cheat food?

XMM: Rice krispy treats. (laughs)

MVS: Who are some of your favorite past and present boxers?

XMM: Sugar Ray Leonard, Meldrick Taylor, Roy Jones Jr, Fernando Vargas, Shane Mosley, Sergio Martinez, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Juan Manuel Marquez, Andre Ward and that’s just off the top of my head but I can go on and on.

MVS: What are some of the things you have accomplished and titles won in the amateurs?

XMM : I won around 22 national titles I was ranked #2 in the world in 2007 at 125lbs.

MVS: What’s been the biggest difference between the amateurs and pros?

XMM : The biggest difference is the pace of the fights. Amateur fighting is more
of a sprint and professional fighting is more like a marathon .

MVS: Is there anyone you can’t wait to fight in the future?
XMM : Well right now I do not really want to call anyone out but I’m just looking forward to fighting the best out there.

MVS: Anyone out there you want to give a shout out to?

XMM : I’d like to give a shout out Victory Outreach, The G.A.N.G, East LA, Ernie from Everlast, Relik Realm Clothing and I want to thank all my
fans and supporters for following my career I will do my best to continue to put on exciting fights.
