(La Verne) – Bishop Amat beat Upland to win the championship at the Air Assault Saturday at Bonita High School. Culver City won the consolation championship game against Santiago. The two day event featured 30 teams and started Friday afternoon.

Arroyo, led by returning quarterback Nathan Coto, went 3-2 on Friday then lost its first game on Saturday to Santa Fe. The Knights beat Ontario Christian but fell to Culver City. On Friday Arroyo knocked off Monrovia, Kaiser and Ayala and lost to Bonita and Glendora. The game against Kaiser lasted four overtimes.

“We were wiped out after Friday. We competed hard all day in that heat against five really tough teams,” said Arroyo Coach Jim Singiser. “We were in every game. We played hard. To get four wins in that tournament in our pool…we’ll take it. I mean look at the teams we played. Try to find four wins in that schedule.”

Monrovia lost to Charter Oak on Saturday. The Wildcats have first year quarterback Deshawn Potts ready to replace the graduated Blake Heyworth. Monrovia transfer running back Kurt Scoby was there but did not play. Charter Oak is led by senior quarterback  Kory Brown.

“We’re young but we’re improving. We have a lot of talented kids but we just need to coach them up,” said Charter Oak OC Dominic Farrar.

Charter Oak will spend this year in the Inland Division but next year will move back to the Southeast. “We just like to compete no matter where we are. We can compete in this Division but if they move us that’s ok too.”

Former La Puente Coach Brandon Rohrer was on hand with his new team, Etiwanda. “Football is football. There’s not much change,” Rohrer said of the move from LP. “It’s going to take a couple of years here. The first thing we needed to do was get them in the weight room.”
