Azusa Routs Workman, 53-7

Azusa scored 47 unanswered points en route to an easy 53-7 rout of Workman Thursday night at Citrus College to remain unbeaten in Montview League play.

Cameron Blackburn amassed 208 all-purpose yards (193 rushing, 15 receiving) to lead Azusa, scoring a touchdown in both offensive categories.

***Quarterback Jose Ledesma (9-14, 184 yards, 2-TD/0-int) hit Blackburn for a 15-yard paydirt strike with eight seconds left before halftime to stretch Azusa’s lead to 29-7.

***Blackburn again phoned home on the Aztecs first offensive play of the second half just 27 seconds into it (11:33, 3Q) taking a lateral and dashing 80-yards to the house.

***Workman enjoyed a brief 7-6 lead ending its third drive of the game in the opening stanza when Alex Salgado (7-19, 87 yards, 1 TD) connected with Andre Long for a 36-yard gain to set up another strike (two plays later) to Long for a 32-yard touchdown, which was the Lobos’ lone score in the contest.

***By the intermission, Azusa had overhauled Workman on offense 349 to 93 yardage-wise through a balanced attack of 179 yards in the air and 170 on the ground, limiting the Lobos to four first downs in the first half and three net yards rushing. In the end, The Lobos had just one positive rushing yard.

***Azusa finished with 576 total yards of offense (376 rushing, 188 passing).

***Angel Maldonado ran five times for 61 yards and led the Aztecs with two rushing touchdowns.

***Carlos Montiel, also with a touchdown in both rushing and receiving for the Aztecs, caught the first score of the game on a 72-yarder from Ledesma with 7:29 in the first.

***Montiel then brought Azusa to the 50-point mark on a 53-yard rushing breeze downfield into the endzone with 4:54 remaining in the third.

***Azusa improved to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in league and will resume its bid for the Montview next Friday night as visitors against rival Gladstone in a bid for bragging rights in the Canyon City.

***Workman dropped to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in league. They’ll play Ganesha next Friday night in a home stand at La Puente.
