Game Night: CIF Playoffs – Second Round

All Kick-Offs are 7:00 PM unless otherwise noted

Friday November 22

Mid-Valley Division

Arroyo (10-1) at Schurr (6-5)

Well we didn’t expect to see Schurr here. But the Spartans put the Montebello loss them behind them and went on the road to Viewpoint and got a win. The defense is playing as well as it has all year. It will need to be stout again to stop an Arroyo team that has been racking up the points. Last week the Knight defense was torched by Baldwin Park. They will need to step up and make enough stops to hold off Schurr. “We have to put two halves together to have a shot,” said Arroyo Coach Jim Singiser. It will be close but Arroyo scores more than Schurr. Knights to semis.

Arroyo 24 Schurr 14

San Dimas (7-4) at San Marino (9-2)

San Dimas might be the hottest team in the division right now. The Saints have won seven straight and haven’t been tested during that run. Last week they pounded Gabrielino 48-6. San Marino beat Bell Gardens but this game was tied at 28 in the second half before the Titans pulled away. San Dimas scores a lot of points and San Marino gives up a lot. That’s not a good combination for the Titan faithful. The scoreboard operator will be busy. Saints prevail.

Paraclete (7-4) at Pomona (10-1)

When Pomona played the one elite team on its schedule, San Dimas, the Red Devils were routed 49-6. Paraclete is a cut above San Dimas. Some people give Pomona a shot. We don’t. Spirits roll.

Monrovia (10-1) at Montebello (8-3)

If the Oilers make no mistakes defensively, executes perfectly on offense and special teams and forces a turnover or two, they still lose by two touchdowns. Monrovia is too deep, too experienced and too explosive. I mean, the Wildcats are really good. M-Town cruises to the semis.

Monrovia 41 Montebello 14

Southeast Division

Dominguez (8-3) at Norwalk (11-0) (at La Mirada)

Norwalk was tested early in the first quarter against West Covina but quickly restored order and dropped 42 on the Bulldogs. Rashaad Penny is having an MVP type year. Good win for Dominguez last week over El Rancho. The Dons are the only San Gabriel Valley League team left standing. They won’t be after this one. Penny and the Lancers run over the Dons. Nor-Rock advances.

Los Altos (9-2) at Muir (10-1)

Los Altos once again proved how physical it can be with a 37-10 rout of a big strong Paramount team. The Conquerors ran the ball effectively and took advantage of turnovers. Tevita Sina had a huge game. Muir was too fast for La Mirada. The Mustangs put up 53 and simply ran past the Matadores. It will be speed vs. strength. Muir quarterback Dejon Williams has been ruled suspended for the game after receiving two taunting penalties against La Mirada (horrible calls by the way.) With Williams out, Los Altos might be able to contain the Stangs. If the Conqs can control the clock they should be fine. The Williams suspension takes some of the luster off of the game but Los Altos has the advantage.

La Serna (9-2) at Diamond Bar (7-4)

Diamond Bar has survived everything else but can the Brahmas survive the Lancers? Even with Antonio “Noodles” Hull eligible it’s a tough task. Tyler Brown, Tyler Peterson and Cordell Broadus have been huge for Diamond Bar offensively. La Serna just continues to roll. Frankie Palmer and company are coming off a 55-7 rout of Burroughs. Diamond Bar will score but the Lancers will make the plays when they have to. Lancers win.

Burbank (9-2) at Santa Fe (7-4) (at Downey)

Santa Fe plays the role of Cinderella after a huge win over Hacienda League champions Diamond Ranch. Christian Lara is completely healthy and the Chiefs are back on track. Burbank routed Mayfair and despite a couple of tough league losses the Bulldogs are looking for an extended playoff run. Santa Fe will put up a fight and might even knock off Burbank. But James “Boobie” Williams (or is it the body electric?) have enough. Burbank comes out on top in fourth.

Northwest Division

Oak Park (10-1) at Valley Christian (5-6)

Nice win for Valley Christian but it ends here. Hide the women and children. This could get ugly quick. Oak Park is a team that beat Northwest Division defending champ Nordhoff by 20 points. There will be running clock in fourth quarter. Oak Park moves on.

El Segundo (8-3) at Carpenteria (8-3)

Carpenteria is coming off a win over La Salle while El Segundo took care of Santa Paula. The difference was La Salle was undefeated in the Del Rey while Santa Paula was winless in the Tri-Valley. The Pioneer League doesn’t match up with the Tri-Valley. That will be painfully evident for El Segundo fans here. Carpenteria gets the W.

Bishop Diego (9-2) at Duarte (7-4)

See Oak Park-Valley Christian. It will be over by halftime. Jason Martin’s Falcons are back. A second round playoff game is something to build on. But Bishop Diego is…well Bishop Diego. The Cardinals will score early and often. They’ll make quick work.

Bishop Diego 47 Duarte 6

Nordhoff (10-1) at Torrance (5-6)

Another Tri-Valley League team, another loss for the opposition. In the Northwest it’s all about the Tri-Valley and Nordhoff is another part of it. One thing is for sure when trying to handicap the Northwest – the Finals will feature two Tri-Valley teams. Nordhoff knocks out Torrance.
