“There’s a darkness upon me that’s flooded in light
In the fine print they tell me what’s wrong and what’s right
And it comes in black and it comes in white
And I’m frightened by those that don’t see it”
—Avett Brothers

Kick it!

While I’d love to see Andrew Elffers play football right now for APU, I’m really hoping that current Cougar starting quarterback Nick Owens has uber health this season. Dude’s worked hard, he deserves a big payoff.

…And Victor Santa Cruz says “Amen!”

We all (MVS) took Burroughs this week against Calabasas, which went 0-10 in 2013. The Coyotes new coach is Casey Clausen, they beat Rancho (Nevada) 53-19, last week. They have a lot of beef on the front line and their quarterback Tristan Gebbia, sophomore, threw five touchdown passes.

I think the Indians will surprise more than a few teams this year, but I believe they are going to fall in their opener Friday night.

“It felt bitter sweet, because that was my last first high school game,” said Pasadena quarterback Jorge Reyna when asked what he was thinking after Friday’s opener at South El Monte. The Bulldogs won the game, 50-7, and now prepare for La Salle this week.

I got no information on Burbank quarterback Ryan Meredith being lost for the season. In fact I got the opposite from the coaching staff. So I’m going with what I got at the start of the week, but something to keep in mind is an ankle sprain at the end of August is still hanging around in November.

Do you realize the last time Schurr and El Monte met was on October 16th, 1981 at B.L. Bergstrom Stadium? At the time they were both members of the Mission Valley League and the Spartans, defending CIF champions, beat the Lions 30-7.

…Schurr, up by three touchdowns, in the final minute of the fourth quarter was still passing.

And I was there.

We’ve mentioned, more than enough times, that we’ve expanded this season. Four divisions, 22 leagues, 131 schools…but what is the most popular nickname among the schools? Well, because we have time on our hands, here you go…

Most Popular Nickname (number of divisions they appear in)
1.) Eagles: 9 (3)
2.) Vikings: 7 (4)
3.) Titans: 6 (3)
4.) Wildcats, Falcons, Dons, Mustangs, & Lancers tied: 4
5.) Bulldogs & Panthers tied: 3
Note: I felt certain there were at least 95 or 97 schools nicknamed Eagles.

My Fantasy Football draft is tonight…quick, I need a sleeper.

To be honest…I’m feeling a whole lot better about Downey. Trevor Hill had a nice debut at quarterback, Daevon Vigilant and Justin Huff had nice games running the ball, they registered eight sacks and have guys named Jason Thomas and Gio DeLoera on the roster.

With all of that good cheer…I don’t think they beat the Vista Murrieta 96

Last Add El Monte-Schurr: The schools met nine times between 1972 and 1981 (did not play in 1976) and the Spartans hold a 5-4 head to head advantage.

Remember when Arroyo-Temple City was the headliner of Week One?

Note to Chris Stevens: The last time a Monrovia HC lost the second game of his first season was Steve Garrison in 1994…28-7 to South El Monte. Just tossing it out there.

Really Last Add El Monte-Schurr: The first meeting between the schools was in Montebello on October 13, 1972. The Spartans won, 19-0, thanks to touchdown runs by Mando Marentes and Mario Cabelo. Alvin Barela hit Bob Fredrickson with a 15-yard touchdown pass. The Lions coughed up the ball four times and Schurr defensive back Tony Mareno picked off a pass (his sixth in four games).

Where does El Rancho HC Vinnie Lopez get his quarterbacks? New starter Andrew Perea passed for 170 yards and touchdown last week and rushed for 98 yards and two scores. In 2013 the playmaker was Ryan Araujo and in 2012 it was Joe Sanchez.

Quick Dons Note: They like their offensive line.

I’m not saying it is going to happen, I just asking what if it does happen. What if Chino beats St. Francis on Friday night? Just asking because I know the Golden Knights have a lot of friends on this site…

Note to NorRock:…I coined it…and I need a double-x shirt…Its a foundational MVS belief in a sports karma. We do not believe in a spiritual karma, but a sports karma definitely exists…I need my shirt…if Big George comes to the office again with a medium…you’ll be losing an assistant coach.

Last Add October 13, 1972: In an eight-man football game Rio Hondo Prep and Brethren Christian (Whittier Chrsitian’s opponent Thursday night) fought to a 58-58 tie in what was certainly a prehistoric inspiration for Arena Football.

Note to Keith Knoop: Happy provide bulletin board material. See you at Sharkey’s.

Regards:
In regards to Martin “The Knight” Lopez: He turns 36 today and Mid Valley Sports wishes its good friend to have a great one.
In regards to Noah Evans: The Whittier Christian receiver caught 12 passes in the Heralds opener and now has 161 receptions in 29 games over parts of four varsity seasons. The son of former USC/Bears/USFL/Raiders quarterback Vince Evans has scored 18 touchdowns in his career.
In regards to Hunter Duran: Bishop Sankey? Really? 10th round?
In regards to the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams: They will make the playoffs! Lock it!
In regards to birthdays: Hey! What da ya know! Its’a Northview HC’s Marcel Perez’s birthday too! … 34.

The Dude abides…
