The Peterson Principle: 9/29/14

Cresecenta Valley has always had talented and athletic players. The Falcons run a high powered offense and to do that you need a good quarterback and quick receivers with good hands. For the most part they have had that. But this year there is a difference.

This year they also can get physical. The 2014 version of the Falcons will not only run past you, they will also run over you. They always had speed, now they have strength.

“We can pound the ball now, that’s the big difference with us,” Falcon HC Paul Schilling told his team after the game. “Congratulations you guys dominated! You just pounded them!”

That doesn’t happen very often against a team like Burroughs. Friday night’s 48-21 drubbing of the Indians, was the first time CV has beaten Burroughs in five years. Burroughs is a team that usually gives CV fits. The Indians, big, strong and powerful, in the past have pushed the Falcons around and imposed their will. Not this year.

Jonathan Jun imposed his will by rushing for over 180 yards and four touchdowns. When Crescenta Valley needed to eat clock, it was Jun how did that in the fourth quarter pounding the rock over and over. Guys like Davo Hakobyan, Jimmy Doyle and Ben Lizer were paving the road up front and Jun did the rest. Jun had 31 carries in all including 19 in the second half.

Burroughs needed a stop but couldn’t get one. It was CV who was doing the imposing and CV that was the physical team.

“We didn’t use to be able to do that,” Schilling said.

The Falcons still have the skill guys, Brian Gadsby, Jordan Lobianco, Connor Van Ginkel, Chase Walker, etc. but now they have an added dimension – brute force. Burbank, CV’s next opponent, is banged up and Muir has struggled early. The Pacific could be the Falcons’ for the taking.

Is Lynwood really this good? The Knights are 4-0 and have outscored their opponents 209-24. Granted, they haven’t played St. John Bosco and Crespi but 209-24 is 209-24. Darryl Robinson Jr. has thrown for 505 yards and six touchdowns and Ty Sanchez has racked up close to 500 total yards (475 rushing). They beat Angelou 72-0 and last week Lynwood dropped 55 on Calvary Chapel.

Can they win the SGV League? Can they beat Downey? Dominguez? Time will tell but right now Lynwood definitely has our attention.

Okay, La Serna. We believe. With wins over Los Osos and Rancho Cucamonga the Lancers have proved they’re one of the top teams in the Southeast Division. Back in the summer, we thought Cal or Santa Fe or El Rancho might dethrone you in the Del Rio. Now we’re thinking it could get ugly.

That’s my principle.
