Southeast Division Defensive Coordinator of the Year 2014: Bellflower’s Bob Ryan

Bellflower only played ten games this year. Why? we don’t know. That’s a question for the CIF selection committee but what we do know is that they went 7-3 and allowed only 149 points all year (just under 15 points per game.). The Buccaneers had only given up 28 points in the first five games – a run which included two shutouts.

With Bob Ryan directing the defensive unit, the Bucs only real flaw was allowing 40 points to Suburban League champ La Mirada. In that game however, offensive miscues led to La Mirada points. Tony Brown picked up a fumble and returned it 71 yards for a touchdown and the Matadores also had a short field on several drives. The 28 points scored by Norwalk against Bellflower was the Lancers second lowest point total in the regular season.

In five of the Bucs’ ten games, they allowed 10 points or less. Would Bellflower have made a run in the playoffs? We don’t know but Ryan’s crew would have loved to be given the opportunity. Bob Ryan made the most of Bellflower’s opportunity in the regular season leading a defense that was the stingiest in the Southeast. He is our DC of the Year.
