Baldwin Park Braves 65, Eastlake Titans 52

Tomas Montes electrified the Braves’ bench in the first half, hitting 4 of 5 shots from Foothill Boulevard to lead Baldwin Park to a 65-64 win. Fernie Morelos also knocked down 9 of 11 from point blank range in the second half. The duo combined to shoot over 60% from the field and score 23 of the team’s 29 second half points.

Joey De La Torre joined in the fun with eight rebounds and eight points. Jimmy Ramirez fueled the defensive punch with five steals.

Eastlake, from Chula Vista, was coming off five consecutive wins, including a 52-46 upset of a solid Poway squad before falling to Hoover. The Titans did beat Gladstone in their tournament debut on Tuesday.

Dillon Dovia led Eastlake on both ends with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks. Treyvon Ash recorded 9 of his 11 in an explosive first quarter but quieted down after that. Martin Meza (10 points) and Austin Feaster each notched three assists.

South Hills Huskies 51, Gladstone Gladiators 35

It was a slow toe to toe battle for a half before a 13-2 run from late in the second and into the third proved to be the difference in a 51-35 South Hills win over Gladstone.

Huskies’ point guard Joe Paul Rodriguez scored 20 points and knocked down 4 of 6 from three points land. Forward Alek Karpuzyan scored 13 points and made life miserable for Gladstone’s post defense as he drew five shooting fouls and finished 9 of 10 from the free throw line.

Sameer Sedam (8 points, 8 rebounds), Vincent Delgado, Danny Juarez (8), and Steven Mercado all hit from the outside to keep the Gladiators close in the first half.

South Hills improved to 5-1 with the victory.

Mountain View Vikings 46, Chino Cowboys 43

Mountain View finished survived a late Chino run and held on for a 46-43 win. There were four three point shots and a pair of free throws in the final 1:07.

With ten seconds on the clock, Chris Duarte, (5 points), calmly hit one from outside to give the Vikings a 46-40 lead. Eight seconds later the Cowboys’ Mark Valencia raced up court, pulled up and buried a trey from the right wing to make it 46-43. However the Vikings safely inbounded the ball to clinch it.

Jeremy Acosta was on target for View scoring five of his first six buckets before finishing with 14 points. Jon Sanchez added 13 and Juan Benitiz scored four points and pulled down nine rebounds.

Chino was led by Jon Milian with 13 and Kevin Merrill with six.

Covina Colts 65, Azusa Aztecs 43

Covina led 18-4 after one, held off an Azusa run in the second before eventually running away to a 65-43 triumph. A pull up 25 footer by Nino Harrell just 10 seconds into the second quarter increased the Colts’ advantage to 21-4.

The Aztecs awakened with spurts of 10-2 and 8-3 but got no closer than seven on a Desmond Reed layup 3:25 before halftime. Reed grabbed six boards, had three steals, and scored nine points. Matt Pardo, (12), tossed in a dozen and Abraham Ochoa ripped down seven caroms. Jordan Blackburn hit two of three from downtown to and scored eight points.

Covina Freshman guard Mike Peters led all scorers with 20 in addition to six rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Ren Macalalag scored 10 points had five steals and grabbed five rebounds. JC Ellis notched seven and Kyle Chiu and Kevin Quach each added six.

The Colts held Azusa scoreless for 5:51 of the fourth and finished the Aztecs off by closing with an 11-0 run.
