Fanview Lite: January 21, 2010

Every CIF run in November/December begins with weights in January.

Good Afternoon!

T-Minus-242 Days until “The Mid Valley Classic”

After a slow start the Matt Koffler Marching & Chowder Society is beginning to run away with the Old School Coach of the Decade poll.

Love the sound of the iron clanking in the weight rooms…I do. It’s not pretty, it’s not easy, and it’s all about wanting something that is months away. The players pumping iron this time of year in the cold of the morning or after school without crowds, cheerleaders, bands, or any fanfare are what make covering football a pure joy.

No truth to the rumor the set of “The Mid Valley Sports Show” is called “The Weight Room” because of the girth of the staff…Sounds like some sort of sick Zeke Prado joke.

Who is South Hills HC Steve Bogan going to give the keys of the car to now that Jacob Shirley is graduating? The Huskies are loaded with candidates.

Both Charter Oak and San Dimas return their starting quarterbacks…but after three years who will be tossing the ball around for Alhambra? Who’ll be the head coach? Who’ll be the OC? Important questions for anyone with Almont connections because the Moors always have talent.

Speaking of the Almont, as the casting call gone out to replace Isaac Valdez at quarterback for San Gabriel?

Call me cynical but when I read Kentucky basketball HC John Calipari has plans to help Haiti recover from the recent earthquake, I have a feeling there is probably a pair of extremely athletic 6’10” twin brothers down there looking for a school.

I know, I know…how can anyone be suspicious of Calipari?

Do you think the countdown timer for “The Mid Valley Classic” is a bit much for January?

Its funny, and a tribute to his skills, but I can’t read about a Dodger transaction without wanting to know Blue State’s opinion. So what does he think about Andre Ethier and Vicente Padilla inking new deals with the Dodgers?

If Ethier ever goes to San Francisco does that make him Andre the Giant?

(I guess that’s bad huh? Well all the jokes can’t be good, you have to expect that once in a while.)

I’ve only been around the Smudgepot game for two years (two great years I might add), but this is a big deal. So big, I’m thinking about playing with the countdown timer to reflect kick-off for this monster game. My problem with relocating it to Zero Week is teams aren’t generally playing their best football at the beginning of September. By Week Five they’ve usually found themselves, gained an identity, and the football is great. I would hate to see a great game suffer from the sloppiness that comes at the start of a new year.

On the flipside, with this contest being so emotional, and those Bonita players were hurting inside after the 2009 loss, the benefit for both schools will be nine more games to play and an opportunity to regain focus for CIF.

Either way, you just hate to see something working tinkered with.

How about that Juan Carlos?

To answer what Fred Robledo termed “the eternal question”; No, soccer isn’t going to make it.

I’m trying to get into the Cavs and Lakers tonight, but it’s hard. Maybe if they had some marquee names to draw me in. I so miss the days of Danny Ferry matching up against George Lynch.

Last Add Calipari: He did do a good job in finding a gem named Marcus Camby. It’s hard to believe the rebounding machine Camby was drafted out of UMass in 1996.

I got two notes on Nogales football and three opinions. The first opinion shared with me was that the Nobles will become an instant force in the Valle Vista next season. The first note was keep an eye on Timothy Guerra. The second was about a current sophomore and next fall junior Keith Bolden. I haven’t seen Bolden play, I looked at his numbers on MaxPreps…I’m willing, if somebody wants, to be schooled on Bolden.

Getting psyched for The Mid Valley Draft

The week after the Super Bowl…Join the party.

Staff and loyal readers are taking NFL teams and on draft night they will select area players out of the Southeast and Mid-Valley divisions.

Think in terms of someone picking for the Saints drafting Dujawn Jones out of Monrovia because they need a cornerback. Sign up here and be part of this exercise.

So far we have;

Joe Torosian: St. Louis Rams

Martin “Knight” Lopez: Green Bay Packers

Blue State: Cleveland Browns

Arroyo Knight: New Orleans Saints

Bonita Alum: San Diego Chargers

Andy Villanueva: Cincinnati Bengals

Josh O: Tennessee Titans
