Mid Valley News Old School All Decade Team

This was tough, somewhat unpleasant, and we’re grateful we won’t have to do this again. If we can say one thing about this team, it is not meant to offend. There’s a sad feeling about some of the players we were forced to leave off. We ask that you mention who we left off in the comment box, tell us where we screwed up, ask us to defend our picks. We will defend every one of them, but we also know there are good arguments to be made.

Oh and lets be honest, Desmond Reed is all decade at every position.

Quarterback

Matt Malczynski (Temple City): Rocket for an arm. Fearless in the pocket. The drag about this guy is he had to face Inglewood two years in a row in the second four of the Division X (Division TEN!) playoffs.

Running Backs

Deon Sumler (Rosemead), Audarrius Bailey (Arcadia), Chris Harris (Duarte): These guys did it over multiple years and were dominant.

Wide Receivers

Tommy Cogburn (South El Monte), Sergio Leon (Arroyo): If the receivers look just like the MVL All Decade team, you’re right. These two are a cut above all others, but if we could have added a third receiver it would have been Alfred Varela out of San Gabriel.

Offensive Line:

Kenny Andrew (Arroyo), Tim Starr (Duarte), Brian Soumakian (Temple City), Josh Casey (Rosemead), Lars Guillermo (Arcadia): There were several worthy candidates from all the schools represented here. Arguments can be made

Kicker

Sean Kelly (Monrovia): A tough call over Bobby Maldonado from Rosemead.

Defensive Line

Juan Perez (South El Monte), Mike Harris (Duarte), Luis Diaz (Rosemead): There’s an Arcadia player or two I can think of that merit consideration. These dudes above were beasts.

Linebackers

Tra Sumler (Rosemead), Ronnie Williams (Arroyo), Tommy Bullock (Temple City), Josh Lowden (Monrovia), Frankie Villalobos (San Gabriel): There was a strong argument for Samson Jagoras out of Arcadia, Kevin Harris from San Gabriel, and Joe Reasner from Temple City.

Defensive Backs

Desmond Reed (Temple City), Jermaine Thomas (Duarte), Lee Aguirre (South El Monte): The easiest of all the calls.

Kick Returner

Dwight Broadnax (Temple City): Great return guy, who rushed for over 2,000-yards and scored 24 touchdowns in 2006.

Punt Returner

Anthony Brown (Alhambra): This guy was a heart attack for defenders

Punter: If we need one, we’ll ask.

Player of the Decade: Desmond Reed (Temple City)

Coach of the Decade: Matt Koffler (Rosemead)

Team of the Decade: You’re currently voting.
