Sandra Gutierrez & Friends have EMHS Lady Lions thinking title.

Good Evening!

T-Minus-235 Days until “The Mid Valley Classic”

Poll Question: I thought the 2001 TC Rams would get a lot of votes as the best team of the decade, but fans are not giving enough credit to the 2002 Arcadia Apaches. Jon Dimalante’s team started the season 9-0 and advanced to second round of the playoffs that season.

Guilty.

Over the last ten years 95% of The Mid’s attention in girls basketball has gone to Rosemead and Arroyo in the MVL. Rightfully so, winning streaks of 33 and 44 have a tendency suck up all the air in the room.

Unfortunately we are guilty of letting gems pass through our days without any fanfare. Think in terms of Thomas Gray’s “Elegy” and the line about “Full many a flower is born to blush unseen…”

South El Monte’s Vanessa Gutierrez falls into this place as does a girl from El Monte…

El Monte Lady Lion Sandra Gutierrez recorded the 400th block of her prep career in 30-point victory over Mt. View on Wednesday afternoon.

Gutierrez, in her third year as El Monte’s starting center, is expected to end the season in the top ten in California history in blocks. She also has an outside shot of cracking the top five.

“What makes her accomplishment more impressive is that those in the top five were four year varsity players and she is only in her third,” said EM HC Brian Tabatabai. “She currently ranks number three in the country in blocks.”

While fly-swatting her way into the record book the 6’2” senior is averaging 9.6 points per game, 13 rebounds a game, but also leads her team in assists.

I like the Colts in the Super Bowl, but they need Dwight Freeney.

Saints-Colts Connection: Howard Stevens, Louisville, as a 5’5” kick returner/running back played for the Saints and Colts during the 1970’s. There was a brief flirtation with the smaller framed player in the mid-70’s after the New England Patriots got a big 1974 season out of ‘Mini’ Mack Herron. Herron only had that one big season, and Stevens a 16th round draft pick never had one. However, he was part of three Baltimore playoff teams from 1975 thru 1977.

I didn’t think Purdue would lose to Wisconsin.

Reports say Ken Griffey Jr. is in excellent shape heading into the 2010 season…His fourth decade in the Majors. Never was much of a fan, been very critical over the years, but I get the feeling (do you get the feeling?) that since Griffey has escaped any steroids taint baseball writers are going to put him in the Hall of Fame thirty seconds after he announces his retirement.

Last Add EMHS: Another Lady Lion not to overlook is Tiana Stovall.

For the record Crescenta Valley beat Arcadia in Week Ten of 2002, 49-28 at Salter Stadium.

Stay thirsty my friends…
