Damien’s “O” Has to Go

By Joseph Rodriguez

(Covina) – In a match between early season unbeatans, Damien visited Charter Oak Friday night in a match where “somebody’s O, had to go”.

The Chargers started strong, and remained unbeaten, scoring on their first two drives and going on to beat the Spartans 27-14.

The Chargers took the early 12-0 lead after two missed extra points. The Spartans could not generate any offense and did not help themselves by turning the ball over on the ensuring drive after going down 12-0. At this point it began to feel as if a Charger rout was in the making.

But an error filled second quarter by both teams allowed Damien to stay within reach of Charter Oak’s lead. The Chargers lost their starting quarterback Bret Clemetson for the game a few minutes into the second. Now the potent offense which seemed on the verge of a rout in the first, suddenly fell stagnant.

On the final possession of the half the Spartans offense underwent a resurgence which resulted in a score to cut their deficient 12-7.

The Chargers put the game out of reach behind two fourth quarter rushing TDs to go up 27-7. Damien scored with 1:25 left in the contest to cut the lead to 13, 27-14. This would be the game final.

  • Damien’s Warren Bryan was 10/18, 163 yds., 2 passing TD’s
  • Charter Oak’s Bret Clemetson was 9/12, 117 yds., 1 passing TD before exiting the game in the second quarter.
  • Damien had 3 turnovers, 1 missed FG, Their take away from the game is going to missed opportunities and creating opportunities for the Chargers.
  • The game was a 12-7 contest in favor of the Chargers with nine minutes left in the fourth. A questionable personal foul was called on the Spartans after stopping the Chargers on third down. This allowed the Chargers drive to continue and resulted in the first points of the second half.
  • Damien is at Monrovia next week.
  • Charter Oak is at South Hills.
