(Arcadia) – Jahlique Stephens scored on a 23-yard run in the fourth quarter to seal Arcadia’s 19-12 win over Muir Friday night at Salter Field. The Apaches improved to 5-0 with the victory.

Stephens’ run came with 6:10 left in the fourth quarter but the Apaches still had work to do. The defense then stopped the Mustangs on fourth down on the next two possessions. The last stop coming with 53 seconds remaining as a Muir pass fell incomplete. The Apaches then burned out the clock.

After a scoreless first quarter, Muir took a 6-0 lead with 8:53 left in the first quarter. The Apaches immediately responded when Rolandiss Whitener recovered a fumble off of a punt and raced 35 yards for a touchdown for a 7-6 lead.

The Apaches took that lead into halftime. The Mustangs regained the lead on the first possession of the third quarter when they put together an eight-play, 70- yard drive capped by a two yard run by Jon Stephens.

The Apaches’ Stephens – Jahlique- finished an 80 yard march with a 12-yard run on the next possession to grab the lead back. The extra point was missed and Arcadia was clinging to a 13-12 lead.

A bad snap by Muir on a punt attempt set up Arcadia at the Mustang 47 later in the quarter. Stephens then iced it with his 23 yard jaunt and the defense did the rest.

Jahlique Stephens finished with 128 yards and the two touchdowns on 29 carries. The Apaches needed the running attack as the passing attack was almost non existent. Arcadia quarterback Frankie Contreras completed just five of  15 for 50 yards.

Arcadia, now 5-0, will face Burroughs next week. Muir (2-4) will host Crescenta Valley.
