Panthers Put a “W” in Rosemead, Best Vikings

By Rich Whittington

(El Monte)—The Rosemead Panthers finally got their first win of the 2016 football season, as they beat the Mountain View Vikings, 41-20, Friday evening at Mountain View High School.

The Panthers (1-5, 1-1) got off to a fast start, scoring on the game’s opening drive when quarterback Alex Argueta found wide receiver Elisha Garner for a 51-yard score. Argueta would add two additional scoring passes: A 24-yard toss to wide receiver Justen Campbell and a second pass to Garner that reached paydirt.

Then Argueta handed the quarterback duties over to Isaia Ah-hing. Ah-hing added to the Panther scoring attack by connecting with Campbell on a 58-yard touchdown throw in the game’s final minutes.

Rosemead’s ground attack also contributed. Carlos Alvarez scored on a 20-yard touchdown run. The Panthers also scored defensively, as Garner, playing free safety, returned an interception 90-yard for a score.

Mountain View (2-4, 0-2), playing from behind all night, used its ground attack to creep back into the game. The Vikings ground game, sometimes looking unstoppable, accounted for 427 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Running back Josue Martinez scored on a 1-yard run, and running back Kevin Martinez added scoring runs of 1 and 3-yards. Martinez also converted a two-point conversion attempt.

Both teams retake field next Friday night, October 7.
Mountain View faces Pasadena Marshall at Pasadena High School. Rosemead’s next contest is at home against the Gabrielino Eagles.
